Good list and it makes sense. Note that Composition (the topic of this thread ) is just 1/12th of the formula. So much to learn, so little time!

That list has "presentation" above "lighting"... If Mieves is right (The Twelve elements listed below are in accordance to their importance)
just goes to prove the packaging is more important than the product. lol

I strongly disagree with the sequence.

Anyway it may or may not exactly be "composition", but I'm happy to quote the late and sensational
designer Ludwig Mies Van de Rohe; "Less is more".

Thanks. I'll have to disagree about the tree branches. I think it depends on what it is you're trying to do and such proclamations as "don't ever do this or that" should never be hard and fast rules.

Never say never... An oxymoron that holds a lot of water.

[quote=Apaflo]Actually that is a common myth rather than a truth. Look at paintings by the Old Masters and not one of them ever used the Rule Of Thirds (ROT). They implemented symmetry and balance (which ROT destroys).
quote]

Symmetry can be maintained when rule of thirds is used in one dimension. (see the Rembrandt selfie and the Eddie S masterpiece below)
Apart from that, many of the masters used rule of thirds in both dimension creating asymmetric work... Whistlers Mother jumps immediately to mind.
