What shutter speed do you use and are you somewhat new to photography and shooting from a kayak? There is no reason not to nail a shot. So many of the photographers that I shoot with also shoot from a kayak and most are shooting with a 500mm prime lens. The IQ is unreal and the perspective of being at the water level is so much better then shooting down on your subject. To be fair, I wouldn't try it and about 98% of their shots are done on lakes and not fast moving water. One photographer rolled his kayak last year and came up holding his camera and lens while standing in chest deep water. Camera and photographer survived but the lens didn't.

This one was taken several years ago when I first started using a 55/200mm kit lens with a D3200 Nikon camera without VR. Cannot afford the high dollar lens. I now shot with a 70/300mm lens but still not top quality lens.

That is quite a capture. We have lots of Blue Herons here in the marina. Never have seen one in such an embarrassing position. Too bad you didn't have time to nail the focus.

That is the price you pay taking pictures from a kayak but the experience is worth it.

How sad that you keep that little bluebird chained to the fence! Nice photos!

Lol. There is actually a bird feeder under there but you already knew that.

I took this Blue Heron just after getting out of the water and drying her feathers. It looks like she is doing a Marilyn Monroe pose with her skirt blowing up.

This is where I take all my pictures from. This is my "low overhead studio"

Being at the right place at the right time is important but timing is also important. It is amazing what you can see while kayaking. The pictures may not come out perfect but you can come up with a lot of different subject matters.

North Carolina has a lot of Eastern Bluebirds. These were taken in my back yard.

Great shot. They look like they have more fur than feathers.

I don't use any water proofing although I know I am taking a big chance. The place I kayak is a lake so all I have to deal with is waves from the wind but I still have to be careful. I do keep the lens cap on to keep the water spray off the lens.

D3200 Nikon camera with a 70/300mm lens. I have to shot in the automatic mode because I don't have time to set up the shot. I use the sport setting because it gives me the fastest shutter speed. The hardest part is keeping the kayak in position in moving water. By the time you put your paddle down and pick up the camera the kayak has turned you around. I mainly go in lakes but the waves from the wind are a real challenge.

The size of the bird determines the size of the fish they catch but sometimes I think they catch more than it looks like they can swallow but with a little effort, they get it down.

I take all my pictures while kayaking so it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Using a long lens without a tripod is always a challenge but when you add the movement of the kayak and trying to get into position to take the shot you miss more than you get but you just have to hang in there and hope for the best.

I have seen a lot of Blue Herons but this is the best that I have seen. It was taken at Morrow Mountain State Park in North Carolina on a cold day. This Heron has the best plumage of any I have seen. This is my first post as a new user and I am looking forward to sharing and viewing more photos. I tried to post this earlier but had issues. Hope it works this time.
