So, a neighbor of a friend, captured a photo of a buck in their backyard with a field camera. What’s strange is the red deer projected behind the buck. It really wasn’t there, but where did it come from? Where did the red coloring in the photo come from? Something to do with field cam lighting to focus?

More info:
The field cam was about 12 feet from the buck.
There’s a small storage garage about 13-14 feet to the right of the buck.
Where the red deer is projected is wetlands.
My friend’s shed is about 15 feet to the left of the buck.
They have solar lights on the other side (backside?) of the shed.
Also on the other side of the shed is a huge wooden Moose sculpture.

At first I thought it had something to do with a reflection or mirrored effect and thought the red light must be from the field cam. However, I wonder about the influence of the wetlands, the solar lights and the Moose sculpture. I know the quality if the field cam photo isn’t very good. I can see the red deer but not the big moose head. Any help figuring out how this photo might have occurred would be appreciated.
When she looks to the left of the red deer, there appears to be the head of the moose but way out of proportion.

This appears to be a special case of internal reflection inside the lens called “ghosting”. This can cause bright objects from outside the field of view to be captured by the lens and reflected internally, finally reaching the sensor. Internal reflections occur inside all lens, but most of the time are too low to be perceived. The following link gives further discussion, by Michael C[lark] regarding this effect.

https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/69043/what-could-cause-this-visible-artifact-which-seems-to-a-be-a-glowing-inverse-of/69048#69048

In the case of the field camera, the second deer was likely just outside the field of view of the lens when the camera flashed. The flash hitting the second deer made it bright enough to be sensed by the sensor.

Here is a personal example of this effect. The circled objects were not in the field of view of the lens, but found their way into the image via internal reflections.

Attached is a JPG of an otherwise undeveloped RAW (nothing spectacular).
Also attached is an edited version cropped (perhaps edited too harshly).
I accept that you might improve the edit, but how would you crop the pic?

I think you'll get as many opinions as there are examples.

I chose to rotate the flower onto the diagonal and crop to a 4:5 aspect ratio.

I did a search and could not find an answer...

I used a MacBook Pro and also have a new iPad Mini (6th generation) and having seen sales for the Apple pen I got to wondering if it is possible to use the iPad, tethered to the MacBook, as an editing tablet when I use LR or PS (or whatever processing program).

That is to say, I am not talking about drawing on the iPad directly, but using it like folks used to use Wacom's tablets some years back (and I am sure many still use Wacoms today).

TIA for any insights anyone has

The answer is YES. Been able to do this for several years. I use my ipad as a graphics tablet with my mac often.

You can set it up as a graphics tablet, like a Wacom, and edit your images using the apple pencil on the ipad or you can set the ipad up as a second display and run apps such as topaz while running PS on the main display. This can be wirelessly or connecting via a usb-c cable. Very easy to setup. if your using a mac it's probably already setup ready to go. Once your ipad is turned on, it takes about 5 seconds to connect via the control panel icon located at the upper right toolbar. Here is a link showing how to set it up using a mac and ipad.

If you using a pc and ipad, you'll need a separate app that provides this same function. Here is a link for that.

Here an area from Shanley Park in Granbury, Tx. Granbury is located about 65 miles SW of Dallas Tx. I think you can bring additional color out of this image making it a little more engaging.

Feel free to download this image to your computer. Then you can edit it any way that you think is an improvement. Composites, black and white conversions, textures, sky swaps, inverted images, solarization, or whatever else you think will improve the photo are acceptable techniques for your edit. When you are finished, post your edit in this thread. Edits will be accepted until 9pm Eastern time on Thursday. No edits will be accepted after that time because we will begin voting then. Thank you for your efforts and your participation.

Our 16 year old granddaughter has requested some kind of digital camera for Christmas, she wants one that is lightweight but still has ISO/aperture/shutter speed controls. It should accept filters but does not necessarily need to support interchangeable lenses, but a step up from iPhone or point-and-shoot cameras. (I think lightweight is a key consideration.)

One that she suggested is the NEZINI 4K digital camera, not a brand I am familiar with.

Any suggestions?

I have recommended to young people wanting to start in photography to first use their smartphone. This allows them to focus on light and composition. Since they already have a cellphone camera, there is no additional expense to starting.

Once they better understand lighting and composition, the I recommend a small low-cost ILC camera with an APS-C sensor. There are a number of them, but they need to have all the controls of a larger prosumer cameras and be of the big 4 so there is a better selection of additional lens, if there's enough motivation to continue with photography.

My favorite is the Sony A6000 with the 16-50 (24-70 35mm eq) pancake lens. It's very $ cheap, but built like a tank. It's extremely lightweight, I use it as my hiking camera where weight is a huge consideration. It has all the controls of a more expensive mirrorless and there are a huge number of available lens at all price points.

Just my thoughts

Ok, here are new raw samples, so the EXIF info should be intact. You'll notice that the last photo was taken with a 70-200mm, f2.8II, and it seems to be sharper. I used an A7RIV body.

I'm curious to know whether I'm simply expecting $15k performance from a $2k lens. Thanks.

The first thing I noticed after posting the original jpeg's was that your shooting in a reduced resolution mode. The camera is capable of shooting at 61MPx (9504x6336) but your images were shot in the 15MPx mode (4743x3162). Suggest resetting your mode back to 61MPx and see what you get.

The second thing I noticed was the the focus mode was not listed in LR processed exif file. Unknown whether you used manual focus or autofocus nor the focus mode such as spot or wide-area. So a a replacement, I used the PS's Select | Focus area to get an idea where the sharpest part of the image was. PS indicated that the grass area around the water was the sharpest area, suggesting that the camera focused on the foreground grass. I would suggest using manual focus, where you get the 10x zoom to aid focus and repeat. Don't let the autofocus decide the focal point for a lens test.

And I would suggest reviewing the video in the link I provided in an response in this thread.

Hope this helps
Mike
