Very nice series of photos. This particular dam design has two main purposes. First, it reduces the dangerous hydraulic current in a typical low-head damn. Second, because it uses multiple low-flow spillways, it greatly increases the oxygenation of the water. This improves the aquatic habitat greatly as evidenced by the very good fishing environment downstream. Thanks for sharing these photos.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on the photos and the weir dam.

Osceola Island and the South Holston river are one of my favorite places to relax and rejuvenate. I’ve spend many hours on that river flyfishing. You have captured that section very well.. My understanding of the weir dam is to oxygenate the cold water released from South Holston dam that trout require. Trout fishing in a southern river is not common. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Thank you for the compliment and for the information about the weir dam. You are fortunate to have such a great resource to enjoy.

The guy in #2 has a fish on.

Good eye! Definitely a great place for catching fish.

Isn't fish migration a different subject/aspect of dams? The definition you used applies to all dams.
And if the water level behind the dam goes below the top of the dam, no water will flow over a weir dam also.

A weir generally allows the water to flow over the crest(which is the top) or sometimes underneath some sections. In comparison, dams mainly allow water flow to be regulated (controlled) by gates or spillways. A dam usually does not allow water to go over the crest.

Interesting dam design.

But aren't all dams "a barrier across the width of a river that alters the flow characteristics of water and usually results in a change in height of the river level"?

Unlike dams, weirs do not usually prevent downstream fish migration(as water flows over the top and allows fish to bypass the structure in that water)….also per Wikipedia.

During my recent trip I visited Osceola Island and Holston River Weir Dam located in Bristol, Tennessee. A weir dam is a barrier across the width of a river that alters the flow characteristics of water and usually results in a change in height of the river level(per Wikipedia). It also produces excellent fishing opportunities. This must be working as I saw a large number of people fly fishing.

I just recently returned from Grayson Highlands State Park located in Virginia. It contains 4502 acres and is known for its wild ponies. I was able to hike the trails and locate one of the ponies.

Thank you for commenting. I agree that photo #2 is a better photo than #1. This is a park that I have been to many times. I have many previous photos similar to #2. The view and composition of #1 was more unique to me which is why I like it…apparently more than others.

One more rework….with more contrast.

I think WV holds its own with any of them. For the last two years, I've gone to WV. Last year I missed peak season around Babcock by about four days (a storm blew through and knocked down a lot of the leaves). This year I went a week earlier but due to the dryer and warmer weather, was about a week to ten days early. There was still some color and I was able to get some decent shots -- here are a few. In four previous visits to Babcock the water was much more robust. The lack of water here is evidence of the lower than normal rainfall.

Mike, A very enjoyable and well photographed set! I did a West Virginia Fall trip two years ago. I agree it is an excellent choice with numerous and various subjects.

In reviewing where you have gone for previous Fall trips, it appears that you haven’t been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I did a Fall trip there in 2019….still one of my favorite trips, period. I don’t think you would be disappointed.

Great try and (IMHO)an acceptable result. One more step and the tree would have blocked the shot and possibly the reflection…

Thank you for the supportive comment.

I just used Snapseed to increase the structure for the photo. I am not sure this is an improvement though it may be.

I still like the composition of the photo.

Nice set overall. No. 1 seems a little soft even in download

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Regarding photo #1, I was in the process of composing the photo when I saw the man in the red jacket. I wanted to be sure to capture a photo with him in it. I am not sure if I had my focus point where I would have wanted it or if my handheld camera was as steady as it could be. I liked the way the composition turned out.

I wanted to make sure that the custom modes I set up on two of my newest cameras actually worked like I intended.

I took the attached photos with my new hiking camera, the Panasonic ZS200, and a Panasonic G100.

The custom modes on the ZS200 are set for wildlife, macro, and landscape on a tripod(ISO set to lowest setting rather than auto ISO….2 second delay)

The photos were taken at Vines Park in Georgia, not all on custom mode. Photo #3 was taken on a previous day.
