I plan on purchasing the Canon 70D. I am getting confused on lenses to get. There are the kits with included 18-135mm lenses, but since there are different grades, I am puzzled. After looking at many review sites, I am still confused. Price is a factor. So an option is to buy used or refurbished, but still, which lens. I presently have a Canon 28-135mm and a Canon 20mm. Photographs with either lens have recently shown lack of sharpness, so I think my problem is the Canon 40D, and am currently figuring out what to send in to get fixed.

B&H has a used Tamron AF18-270mm f.3.5-6.3 Di11VC for sale that I would like to know what people think of the sharpness of that lens.

If my 28-135 is OK, that lens will go with me to Africa in October. As will my Canon 100-400, which is old and not the sharpest, but acceptable for me.
I will not go to Africa again, so plan on taking both bodies, and the zooms.

I have been out of the loop for awhile now, and recently started using my Canon 40D. As jerryc41 mentioned, this camera is "long in the tooth". Yesterday I took a road trip to the Nebraska National Forest to do photography, and upon loading them on my computer noticed none of the images were sharp. I was using my 28-135mm Ultrasonic IS lens. Thinking the lens had issues, I put a 20mm lens this morning and took the same images and it was soft, too. Now I am thinking it is the camera. Is there a better way to test lenses and equipment? I need to take this 40D to Africa, and still plan on getting a 70D. I will move that question to a different forum, and this question might belong elsewhere, also. New to the site, also. I have time to get the camera/lens to Canon, but I need to figure out which to send. Thanks.

I have had the 100-400 lens for many, many years. It says on the lens: Canon Zoom Lens EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS. It has been to Canon for sharpness repair at least three times, once due to dust from a trip to Peru. Canon claims there is nothing wrong with the lens, but.......soft at 400mm. Yes, money is a real issue on whether purchasing new equipment, so all of your suggestions are very good. Now I just need to make a decision and stick to it.

I am taking a trip to South Africa in October and have considered buying a new camera. Since I have Canon 20mm, 28-135mm and the 100-400mm IS lens, I was looking at the 70D for the touch screen and WiFi. I will not be taking my computer with me and the WiFi is intriguing so I can post to my Facebook Page. The 100-400 is not a perfect lens, as I find it soft at 400, although acceptable. Since I cannot afford a really pricey setup, I am now starting to think that I should just stick with my 40D and present lenses. I wanted to go with the 75-300mm, but reviews are not great. The only advantage is the lightness of the lens. The 100-400 is bulky and heavy. I have looked at bundles, but they usually contain the 75-300mm. I am really just thinking out loud.

I am new to this site. I live in south-central Nebraska and have been using a Canon 40D and taking a lot of cell phone photographs. It is fun to challenge myself with a cell phone, and I love the quality of the the photos. I am in the market for a new Canon and am looking at a bundle with a Canon 70D and the Canon 75-300mm lens. Does anyone have any experience with either? Thanks.
