Nice assortment. I guess you won't be getting the snow that's headed this way.

Some parts of NJ are going to get a few inches. Here in Central Jersey we should see less than one inch.

I took a lot of photos there. This will take a few posts.

Nice shots. Been there many times. about a half hour drive from where I live!

On the way back to fly home from KJAX, we stopped at the Jacksonville Zoo. Some good animals in good habitats. Some animals were not on display. I would like to get more time in Jacksonville. It probably has some good stuff to see.

St. Augustine, FL is the oldest city in the United States. It has an incredible history from the 16th, 17th, 18th & 19th centuries. Spent my 80th birthday week there as a vacation given to me by my significant other. I didn't feel like lugging my D850 or my D5500 and the lenses, etc. I chose to travel light, and use my Nikon Coolpix P7000, which has virtually the same controls/options as my DSLRs, and exceptional image quality. I refuse to use the digital telephoto. If I can't get it with the optical, then I have to move closer. This is the first set. I will be posting more as the days go by. I hope you enjoy them, and constructive criticism is welcome.

I became an octogenarian this month. There are some physical challenges, like getting up from the floor after looking for something I dropped. Or, more easily tripping over things and finding it’s harder to keep from falling. Or, being around a bunch of other old farts and joining the bitching about health issues. Or, sadly, attending funerals of peers. But, I can still fly airplanes, bowl twice a week, and lug my D850 around to continue to learn how to be a photographer. My brain works fine (not taking votes on that), I intend to enjoy what life remains.

This is not the first instance of this situation with this particular camera model.

These seem to me the most plausible explanations:

In [this DP Review poster's] opinion, It's more likely your D850 is from a stolen shipment, but it could be counterfeit...

Sometimes employees at manufacturers will make extra units of a product at the end of the day's run to keep for themselves or sell cheap. If your D850 is a counterfeit, it would explain the number on the poor quality serial number sticker not matching the internal serial number. The product is the same as legitimate product with all the same parts, but the official company that ordered the production doesn't know about the extra units that were made and have no record of the serial numbers of the extra units.

In manufacturing there are always parts that don't meet quality control and are destroyed, if a few employees want to make a few extra units, they just mark off additional parts as destroyed.

This has been a problem for decades with smaller, valuable items.

Or that it [was] one of a bulk sale from Nikon to a major customer, such as an agency, which has been sold on in contravention of the terms of sale, and that the S/N switch has been done to cover the tracks.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60327353

Or that the production factory itself conspired to manufacture and sell unauthorized but otherwise authentic units.

Why yes, I completely agree with you. But I have to ask, why are you telling me this? Did I mention anything about the D850 compared to the D5500. I don't recall the D5500 even mentioned in the thread unless I missed part of it. Isn't the thread about the OP's D850 having a different serial number plate attached to the original serial number plate to hide THAT plate?

Could you please refresh my memory as to what I may have said that would give you some inkling that I was at all interested in the D5500 compared to the D850. As an ex cop I made note of the different serial numbers and pointed that out as in LEO use.

I will be right here for your reply. Thanks in advance.

Dennis

It was a bit out of context. I am just a little overwhelmed by the complexity of the D850. I bought Darrell Young's book "Mastering the Nikon D850", and it's almost 700 pages! So, besides not knowing the provenance of my camera, I'll need a masters degree to manage it.

It would seem to me the real mystery is, why would someone go to the trouble to obtain and then paste a false serial number on the camera when the camera already has a perfectly fine serial number. Where would someone come up with the pasted on fake serial number and why?

There is no reason the camera would not work just fine as it is one of Nikon's finest cameras.

Dennis

Moving up from a D5500 to the D850 is like going from removing a splinter to brain surgery. A monster learning curve.

I bought the camera, speedlight, AF NIKKOR 28-200 3.5-5.6 ED, AF NIKKOR 24-85 2.8-4 D, AF NIKKOR 35-70, AF NIKKOR 50 1.8D, AF NIKKOR 24-120 3.5-5.6D, and a Tamron, motor drive, a bunch of accessories, and a Lowenpro backpack for $2,000. The camera works perfectly. I guess I got a good deal.

My next door neighbor has a "rescue" pit bull. It doesn't like me, and has attacked me, also. I can put my finger on my thigh, where its tooth hit. It later made an attempt on our 11 year old grandson. I think Pit Bulls should not be allowed to be adopted out!!! Yes, I know some are OK, but they as a breed, are responsible for 60%~ of fatal dog attacks! The owner thinks of it as her child, sooo sweet...

Yes, pit bull breeds can be aggressive, and are responsible for several injuries and deaths. However, historically, bully breeds were used as nannies to protect children. What happened is that they were trained to be used in dog fights and some jerks trained their dogs to be very aggressive guard dogs. Yes, pit bulls have become dangerous, especially around children, but it all comes down to how they were bred, trained, and managed. I have a lab/pittie mix who is obnoxiously sweet. She wants to be petted, belly rubbed, or given treats all of the time. My neighbor has a purebred pittie who looks dangerous but is very laid back. So, don't condemn a breed, condemn the humans who screwed them up.

I was trying to learn as much as I could about my Nikon D850, which I bought from the widow of a departed friend. I tried to connect via Bluetooth to Snapbridge on my iPhone, but the app kept showing a serial number different from that on the camera body. Upon closer inspection i found that a model/serial number plate had been pasted over the original plate. The pasted plate has a different serial number, and the original plate has the same as depicted in Snapbridge. First of all, I can't figure out whether this is a US or grey market camera, or why the change in the serial number. The camera only has 2262 shutter actuations and comes with several lenses and accessories. I'm confused! See the images:

This is the overlaid plate

This is the permanent plate with the? real? serial number.

I have the Epson V550. Current version is the V600 at about $300. It is NOT fast, but results are very good and it does four at a time. The Epson V850 is another $1000 but said to be a lot faster and does a dozen at a time.

Any scanner you buy can be sold so your net cost might be minimal.

I've been using the V550 for hundreds of slides and thousands of negatives. It is a slow process, but with the Silverfast 9 software, or even Epson's Scan Utility, it is not difficult. You just have to understand that this is a long-term project, won't happen overnight. I save the jpgs to a separate portable HDD, and I have Backblaze cloud backup on all of my drives.

Hello my friends. Now that I have gone down the road of full frame FX cameras and heavy glass, my bride tells me she would like to learn photography. Something that takes a EN-EL15 battery would be a bonus. If you are in Richmond, VA I could add in a pretty pie!

I have a D5500 that will cost around $400 and a D80 for $100. Your choice.
