From the American Bar Association: Latest version of CHAT GPT (Artificial Intelligence program) “aced” the bar exam with a score in 90th percentile.

Which implies what: that a computer program is as “competent” as 90% of those that pass the Bar Exam?

https://www.abajournal.com/web/article/latest-version-of-chatgpt-aces-the-bar-exam-with-score-in-90th-percentile

What will this presage for other areas of expertise?

Will people regard answers from a program as being accurate, believable and reliable?

Will they know the difference?

Also: Can the programs be “subverted” to give, if not specific responses, answers “slanted” toward a pre-determined outcome? Perhaps by providing “training data” of a particular slant or viewpoint?

The “Age of the machines” may be approaching.

Impressive as it is, it is still just an advanced search and sort algorithm. Same as going down to the DMV and passing the written drivers test, you can get all the answers on line, just memorize them and pass the test. Doesn't mean you understand them, doesn't mean you can make on the fly modifications to those rules based on the situation at hand.

When that machine can win several complex live trials then maybe we have something.
It's neither artificial nor intelligent just, for now, an advance complex machine. Real non-organic machine intelligence will come, probably a long way off, and then the real legal issues will arrive.
One of my favourite discussions of this to date is Star Tek Next Generation episode "The Measure of a Man"

I to grew up listening to the Goons, I still listen occasionally, there's at web station from Canada the plays episodes intermittently, I think there is also one in Australia. There are many excellent skits but one of my all time favourites is, what time is it eccles. Circular reasoning at it's very best.

Much ado about nothing. Three went over during Trumps time and little was said.

Yes, they did. They started fires and killed a few people. It seems that China can control their balloons.

I think it's just Panic de jour.

If the Chinese have managed to develop that much control over a drifting helium sphere, then the US has a bigger technology issue.

I'm inclined to think it is just a weather balloon that was under inflated. Those type of balloons are designed to rise to around 100k feet at which point internal pressure is enough to explode the balloon and the instrument pack parachutes back down.

My daughter's hard drive and backup drive crashed. She has to reinstall programs and data. She's in business and uses MS Office 2010, but does not have the original disk. I use Apache Open Office and suggested she download it. She said Open Office does not run Excel and Power Point. I know it does open Excel, because I use it and it opens older spreadsheets I still have.

Does anyone here have positive experiences with Open Office running Power Point documents?

Thank you for feedback,
Mark

If she's using it for business just have her get an Office subscription, about $70 per year. With that she will also get a TB of OneDrive that can be used for backup. I did that and although my business is gone I still have the subscription, every folder on my computer is also a OneDrive folder and all data is automatically saved.

I have an Epson R280 printer and an Olympus P400 dye sublimation printer, with some print media. Both excellent condition and neither used for several years. I live in Vallejo CA. Free to a good (or not so good) home, just come and pick them up.
PS while free I wouldn't refuse a pizza donation

There's a Pez Museum in Burlingame CA, just south of SFO. It's pretty much right next to the Cal Train station

Do any of you use OneDrive. I'm uploading some videos for people to watch, and I filled DropBox, and I'm working on Google Drive. I started with OneDrive, and it's ridiculous.

I created a folder for these videos, but it keeps putting them into my vault. At almost every move, I have to "Verify." I enter my email address and wait for a code. I've had to do that three times so far. With the other two service, I simply created a folder and uploaded files to them.

I use OneDrive for everything. ALL my folders are on OneDrive, everything, documents, pictures, downloads all of it. I basically only have my programmes on the computer. Been doing it that way for years and never a problem, it also means I can get at anything anywhere.

All of the unions should be shut down; they are dinosaurs.

whether or not you ever joined a union, unions are largely responsible for the working conditions you have. 40 hr. weeks, time and a half for overtime, lunch breaks, safe workplaces.

Agreed unions need some changes, but obviously so does management, you know one thing that to me as someone living but not raised in the US is it's seems that US business still hasn't gotten past the civil war, they still treat employees as disposable, an expense rather than an asset

Can you tell us what file to delete and how to delete a single file embedded in a ISO image?

I have no PC capable of running Windows 11. The newest has an i5 seventh gen CPU but that's not supported in Windows 11.

I have a 5yr old Lenovo Tablet, Miix 730, i7 8gb ram, MS said no upgrade, A little digging, and I discovered how to upgrade, basically, after downloading the ISO file from MS there is a single file to delete, that file checks to see if it passed MS compatibility. The install was smooth and trouble free, all my programmes work smoothly as before.
I have an older graphics programme that is not supposed to be W11 compatible, still works perfectly.

I find W11 is a little faster when booting, when opening your browser and accessing most programmes. I also this the look is a little softer, otherwise everything is effectively the same

I captured this image on the Central Coast of California. I love taking walks on foggy mornings, and the Point Estero Estero shipwreck was on the sightseeing list for the day. Below is some information about the vessel.

Just west of the town of Cayucos CA, along the coastline and the Pacific Coast Highway, is a fascinating shipwreck, in remarkable condition!

The Point Estero was a commercial fishing vessel that had originated from Morro Bay Harbor. On July 28th, 2017, on its way back to Morro Bay, it unfortunately ran aground at the eastern part of Estero Bluff State Park, supposedly due to operator error.

It took the U.S. Coast Guard less than two days to remove all the hazardous materials from the stuck ship, including a large supply of oil. The Coast Guard though does not salvage abandoned vessels that are located on land or are semi grounded on coastal rocks, as their area of authority is navigable waters, therefore the Point Estero did not fall under their purview, and remained where it was.

The owner gave up possession of the boat, once it was estimated that it would cost at least $175,000 to remove the boat and tow it back to Morro Bay Harbor. Since the vessel is stuck in a state park, the State Lands Commission does have the authority to remove the ship, but due to a legislative oversight by the state, the commission has no funding or budget to actually do so!

And thus the boat remains, there along the coast west of Cayucos, just south of the Pacific Coast Highway, which runs east / west there as it hugs the coastline! It has been stripped of everything, including all electronics and engine parts. When the tide is low, it is extremely easy to walk out to the shipwreck and board her. I advise some caution, however, as holes are already forming on the ship's floor.

Not surprisingly, there are a few urban legends surrounding why the ship crashed off shore ranging from the ship being stuck in a storm surge to the ship being borrowed by a friend of the owner and being used for a night drinking, resulting in the ship being run aground after one too many. Whatever the reason, there is now another fascinating stop along Route 1.
