One quick question is it possible that your husband set the camera up for back button focus? And sorry for your loss

I tired that and when it takes a picture an error message comes up. I am thinking I will need to take to a shop.

No, it isn't. If you have a good camera store nearby-- sometimes they can help troubleshoot. It's hard to troubleshoot over the web. Good luck. Sorry I couldn't help more....

Yeah I might do that thank you for your help

You might try to see if you can find a known-good battery. If the battery in your D90 is tired (entirely possible with a ten-year-old D90) it might have enough voltage to show as fully charged, but still not be able to supply sufficient current to operate the on-camera flash or focus motors. It may be a long shot, but is one issue that could cause both the dark pics and lack of autofocus.

I will try that. Thank you

You should see the mirror before depressing the shutter. It will then raise and the drop back down. Use a longer shutter duration-- one second or so. Then you can observe what happens.

It doesn't do anything :/ that's probably not good

Set the camera to manual and remove the lens. Look into the camera while depressing the shutter. Verify that the mirror and shutter mechanism are operational...

This might seem silly but when you do that what should it look like to know if it is working right?

Check the AF/M lever below the lens release button. Make sure it is fully in the AF position and not in M or stopped midway between.
Also try pressing the AE/AF Lock button on the rear of the camera to see if it may be set to back button focus.

It will only let me take pics if the camera lense is on manual but nothing on auto. And now when i take pics I get this message. I hope to figure this out I would love to be able to use a camera again vs my phone.

I'm not familiar with this camera but I think under the circumstances I would start by doing a factory reset.

I have tried that stil nothing.

This is a little obvious, but have you taken off the lens cover? Nevermind. I do see some details in your photo
It looks as if the camera was set to use flash. Did the flash door open, and did the flash go off? It's possible that the flash door is stuck down, or that you accidentally held it closed.
You might check what ISO (sensitivity) the camera is set to. If it's set to 100 indoor photos with the kit lens won't be getting enough light. Try changing to 1600. Or just try taking some pictures outdoors in daylight.
Make sure that the lens aperture is set to Auto, if it is settable. Not an issue if it is a G lens.
Try dis-mounting and re-mounting the lens on the camera. Not likely, but it's possible that corrosion on the lens contacts is preventing the camera from operating the lens properly.
Hope this helps at least a little.
Jerry
This is a little obvious, but have you taken off t... (show quote)

That helped changing the ISO now the only thing is it won't focus they only way to make it focus is if I put it on manual. I have changed lenses too.

So I have a NikonD90 which we have had for years but it was my husbands before hand and he passed away last year. I finally felt ready to use the camera after all this time and I can't seem to get it to work. When I try and take a picture it just stays dark and it won't take any pics unless I hit the button a few times for some reason it won't focus. The picture at the bottom is one I took in a lighted room with the flash and its dark. I have even swapped out lenses. I really hope this is a easy fix I would appreciate any help.
