My favorite portrait lens for my crop sensor camera is a 85mm f1.8. I prefer a little longer lens than the 75mm equivalent the 50mm will give. The 85mm on a crop sensor has the field of view in between the classic 105 and 135 portrait lenses for 35mm film cameras.

I just got the 85mm f1.8 for my D7200 and even though I have had very little time to use it, I agree with you. After using my 35mm f1.8 and having to get too close to my subjects, or crop the heck out of the picture, it is very rewarding to stand back a ways and get a nice shot with beautiful color and that lovely bokeh! Can’t wait to play more with this new lens, so glad the weekend is just around the corner!

I just received my 85mm 1.8 G yesterday for my D7200. Only got to play with it a short while last night, but I can see I am going to love this lens! I was going between the 50mm 1.8 & the 85mm 1.8 and I finally decided on the 85. I have been using my 35mm, but for portraits I found I had to be too close to my subject to get the look I wanted. I have to say that just the couple of shots I took with it on my D7200 last night I was very pleased with the color and the bokeh. Took a couple of my husband and of my dogs and was quite happy! Of course, I think I will need a macro for my 3 yr old granddaughter, as she likes to stand 2 inches from the camera lens and the 85 just won’t allow that!

Isn't commenting about what other people do even more petty? Why do you feel the need to intrude when folks are enjoying a conversation? Would you do that in the real world?

Yes, Chippy, you are right, it is a new era and far to easy with that click of a button!

Don't be a spoil sport - spread a bit of love! We are all very pleased for her. Haven't you ever had something that you wanted to tell others about?

Thank you Heather! But I think someone cleaned all the sugar from his cup. But it is ok, I am just excited to receive my purchases and so happy to hear about everyone else who has made the same purchases, that rain on my parade as he will, it won’t stop the sun shining down!

Looking forward to see some images with that new lens. Fast primes are somewhat more appealing than zooms in the same range.

Can’t wait to get it and try it out!

Nikon 85mm lenses have been a favorite of mine for a long time, from the old H series on a film Nikon F to my 85 AFD for digital now. You’ll like it a lot!

Can’t wait to get it, but got an email today from UPS saying that they changed the estimated arrival time from Tuesday the 13th to unknown because of inclement weather! Hope I get it before Adoramas 30 day return policy is up, although I really don’t foresee having to return it!

Thanks Peggy. I'm now looking quite seriously at the Tamron 85mm 1.8 DI VC. The difference in price compared to the Canon offering is substantial, and the Canon isn't Image Stabilized and I have been lusting for a prime. Ah, acquiring new gear is fun!

You’re welcome! I should have looked at the Tamron 85mm before purchasing the Nikon version, it does not have stabilization either, seems Tamron has figured out that some of us need stabilized lenses! Happy shopping!

Unfortunately all of my lenses have to be IS or VC due to old age tremors. From the test shots I took @ The Rocky Mountain Wildlife Refuge, this Tamron 24-70 fits me perfectly! I love this lens.

You posted some amazing pictures while I was typing! Very nice!

Well said sir! Jimmie Bob has a problem with anyone sharing their joy of a new purchase, or heaven forbid the arrival of 'the big brown truck'. It has been his forte since arriving on the forum, and most of us just laugh at him for his silly juvenile and trite comments to happy users with their new purchases. He rarely has anything substantive to add to the conversation. By the way, would anyone like to hear about my brand new Tamron 24-70 G2 VC?

Haha! So true, Jake! And heck yes! That new Tamron 24-70 G2 VC sounds intriguing, tell us about it, got any pics taken with it? I, for one, love hearing about others purchases because a lot of times it is something I didn’t even know existed.

Prime lenses are great. One good thing is that they usually have almost zero distortion. Zoom lenses usually have barrel distortion at wide settings and pincushion distortion at long focal lengths. B & H Photo has an instant rebate going on right now with the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens. I took this photo recently with it on my D7000. I think the VC helped to get a steady shot. It was hand held at 1/30 second.

Wow! Beautiful! And handheld at 1/30 second! That’s pretty amazing for sure!

I know that the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens. For prime lenses, I go for Tamron's new SP series primes. The reason is that they all have vibration compensation. They also have a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. It's especially important to have stabilization now with high pixel density cameras. Camera shake can be more evident. I purchased the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens for my Nikon D7000 and D500. I've been able to get stable, blur free photos at shutter speeds as slow as 1/25 second hand held. The new lenses are the 35mm f/1.8, 45mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, and 90mm f/2.8 macro.

Oh!! I always forget about Tamron! I should have looked at those too! For some reason I only think of Tamron for zoom lenses, totally forgot they make a good prime as well! Thank you for reminding me! May have to take a look at their 45mm! I already have the Nikon 35mm and the Nikon 85mm shipped today, or maybe I will take a look at the 90mm macro!

The D7200's no slouch.
Doubt you'd see a difference.
I just like the way it handles and it has flicker detection for dealing with lighting that pulses you'd find in gymnasiums and other venues.
Get lenses and lighting...and experience!

Yes, that is what I intend to do for now. I really do love my D7200 and I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of my new lens and flash...and now the transmitter as well!! I sure hope my grandkids are ready for me to be chasing them around with all my new stuff!!

The D-500 is awesome!
Borrowed one from Nikon last May.
Probably the best DX DSLR on the market.

I agree, just afraid I would not be able to convince the hubby that I really need that over my D7200! Although one of these days my finger just may slip when the D500 is in my cart!!
