Whatever you use (paper,cloth, etc, ) make sure it's a good distance behind to blur it.
No haters here,,,you can still make a Pinhole camera in your cave, Progress,,,who needs it.
Never had it happen but I've read that a low format will speed up the action

Lens flare? Reflection from a moving object out of the shot?
For starters; tripod, focus almost at infinity, f stops around 8, and a cable release on bulb. Experiment and have a blast.
