Truly a bird with dignity and grander! Fantastic pictures!

Thanks GC for taking time to view and comment. Due to the time and lighting I had to push the ISO further than I normally like. Wasn't sure how they would turn out.

We have several hawks that frequent the area. Caught this one having dinner in the back yard lemon tree.

Is it the Rufus the conqueror?

Or maybe Ebinezer Rufus. Not sure but it is hilarious to watch.

These shots were taken this afternoon in a different location. I moved the feeders this morning, and my little feathered friends soon found their treats as well as new places to perch. The pear tree in the background provides a nice emerald contrast. Sometimes they blend in so well with the leaves, they're hard to spot.

I must say, I've really been having fun with RAW and am getting no chores done!

And yet another fantastic set. Thank you for sharing Vicki.

Chores can be put into the "round-tuit" list. Those little fellas are fleeting. I think you have your priorities set just right. Excellent collection Vicki. Thank you for sharing.

These are for those of you who aren't tired of seeing HBs. As long as they're willing to pose, I'll keep shooting. Their colors can be amazing, changing as the light hits them.

One word. AWSOME!!!!

Beautiful shots Vicki..

The first shot, a Gold-Crowned male sparrow, was taken on April 15. I believe I used my old standard settings of aperture priority in jpeg format on the camera. A bit of editing was done in Elements 13.

The other shots include Gold-Crowned Sparrows and a couple of HBs shot this morning in manual mode RAW. The editing process was almost the same with a few additional tweaks. I must credit mrjcall (Jim) with the push to move in this direction as I try to get better quality images. Any success I've had is due to his valued constructive critiques. Any failures are my own. I must say, I've really enjoyed the move in the direction of trying to get more control of the process. There's still so much to learn, it's a bit daunting.

Feel free to offer suggestions as I continue to learn from all critiques. Thanks, Vicki

I decided to try just sitting still in a lawn chair in a shadow and see how close birds would get. Since a lot of this years fledglings now associate me with food and water. So I just sat in the chair under the shadow of the pool slide. 6 feet from the birdbath and its potted "jungle" and around 15 feet from the swing set/play fort with the feeders hanging from it. One of the young male finches played around the bird bath for a couple of minutes but when I thought about raising the camera to snap pictures he took off and landed on the far side of a feeder, for 10 minutes I got glimpses of seeds, shells etc with a bit of his tail. Meanwhile this young squirrel and some doves were feeding on the ground from his sloppy left overs. (dogs were napping in the family room with oldies playing)
#1 7DII, 100-400 @ 400, 1/500 @ f/7.1, ISO 1600 back light from afternoon sun, hand held
#2 same but he moved a foot into better light so ISO 640

Sitting in the lawn chair in the shadow of the slide, bird feeding on ground at a bit over 15 feet in #1 and 20 feet in #2.

#1 7DII, 100-400 @ 400, 1/640 @ f/7.1, ISO 2000 - bird was partly in a shadow with back lighting - handheld
#2 all the same except ISO 2500 - bird in shadow of a 4x4 of the swing frame

Excellent shots Robert. That body and lens combination does one heck of a job doesn't it?

This series is from recent attempts to catch some of the many (15+) we have coming to enjoy our feeders. Most of our visitors are "Anna's," but we're seeing some "Rufous" in the mix which will only be here a short time as they migrate north. I've shot them inflight stopping the wing action as well as showing the blur and have decided the blurred version is more accurate to what we actually see.

The perched Rufous is a little soft. He was shot late in the day when the light was poor, and I couldn't get him any sharper. I debated posting that shot but thought you'd like to see the difference between the two varieties.

Excellent set Vicki. Really like #1.

Fortunately here in SoCal we are blessed with these little jewels year round.

We have a couple of Roufus males that have claimed the feeders for themselves. Creates quite a show at times.

Very Good light from the sun backlighting the blossoms on our little potted "Tango Mandarin" Orange tree coupled with fill light reflected from a clear blue sky. Gave the flowers and leaves an airy glow with the lawn behind it going totally out of focus. Main drawback is the bee. I will try to get a sharper image like this before the blossoms fall off.

7DII, 100-400L mk II + 1.4x III @ 560, 1/640 @ f/8.0, ISO 250

I personally don't care if the level is off a little. Not entering into a contest or trying to sell them. They look fine to me and to me that is all that matters. Not really looking for a critique.
