Folders are just the most basic level of organization on your harddrive. You'd be better served just hiding the entire folder display from your LR desktop.

Instead, begin to display and work and think about your images inside LR using 'collections'. This starts by going to your 'Navigator', ie the left-hand panel display in the Library, at the top of the section you've screen captured showing your folders. Right-click and de-select the folders and click the Collections.

Collections are like folders, but they're virtual and entirely inside LR. They also allow you to 'hold' a single image inside of 1 or many unique collections. You can create virtual copies of images and stick those in collections too; the intelligence of LR manages all the virtual copies (of copies of copies) back to that single original image file that resides in a single folder on disk.

Consider both Collection Sets and Collections. A Collection Set is a collection of collections. You can't change a collection to a collection set, but you can drag n drop collections into a collection set. So, you have full flexibility to organize your collections and to redo that organization if / when needed. If you delete a collection, the images remain as-is, including all the multiple collections where they exist, except for just the collection being deleted.

You might have a Collection Set = National Parks. Then, maybe collections that represent each park's images. There's no need for collection YNP2014 and YNP2016. Of course you can, but inside a collection Yellowstone NP, you can use the Metadata filters to filter by year, or combinations of attributes. As you continue to build your library (database) of your images, all the multiple visits to Yellowstone and similar parks are organized together.

You might have a completely different Collection Set of Wyoming, with collections for each city and / or Vacation-2014. Although this cross-filing organization at first seems redundant, it is completely virtual. You could even have a Collection Set of Vacations, with YNP2014 as a collection inside this set. There's a set-up effort, but once you have a content-based organization that fits your needs, you can think of finding your images in numerous ways, whichever fits your needs.

Beyond collections, it's critical to keyword your images. Keywords give quick search terms and additional filter options. Put everything in that makes sense, such as: city, state, park, people's names, restaurant name, rock formation, flower name, so forth. The EXIF data covers the date, camera and lens that you can filter on without needing to include these as keywords.

The 'hardest' part of getting started with keywords and collections is the rigor of doing this admin work. It has to become part of your workflow, maybe after initially importing the images. It takes the same time to keyword 1 image as to select 100 images together and to apply the same keyword to them all at the same time. I do the keywords even before culling as deleting the images with keywords costs me nothing.

Maybe you like flowers and you toss the flower images from all your various trips into that 'All flowers' collection too. You also should have flower (or flowers) as a keyword. The more distinct keywords you apply, the more different search and filtering options you empower within your LR database. With all your flowers in a common collection, images that span years and different cameras and different lenses, you can use a keyword filter to look at all the daisy images inside this collection, then maybe all the daisies from the same lens on the multiple cameras used. And so forth.

Very interesting. My attempts on my Sony A6500 must have all been with subjects not in its database, as the results have had a lot of degradation. I almost never use it for that reason.

I use this lens on my Sony a6500 all the time and love it. Very sharp, even stretched to it's limits. Florida birds and other wildlife are precisely what i shoot with this lens. The ability to quickly flip to manual focus on the lens is invaluable to me.

Hi All - after trying all sorts of things suggested in the FAQ section on Skylum's site to make Luminar 4 work on my Windows 10 machine, i gave up and submitted a tech ticket. They responded today (within 24 hours) and told me to deactivate Windows Defender. I had added Luminar 4 to WD's exception list, but this didn't seem to do the trick. Turning it off completely made Luminar 4 work beautifully on my computer. It's apparently a known problem with Luminar 4 and Windows Defender for Windows 10 specifically. You can roll back the version of Luminar, as has been suggested in another post, or change the compatibility of it to Windows 8 and it works fine without having to deactivate Windows Defender. I did a little research and decided to change my overall virus and firewall protection to Kaspersky, so i can keep Windows Defender turned off. Once i did this, i had no problem.

I'm running Windows 10 on an HP with an I7-4770 3.40 GHz processor with 16 GB RAM, & Nvidia GeForce Ti and have had no problems with any Adobe or Topaz products, so i'm pretty sure this conflict is more about anti-virus software on Windows 10 than it is about anything else. Hope this helps some who are struggling like i was.

There's a known issue with Luminar 4.3 affecting many users (including myself) which prevents the program from getting past the splash screen. Skylum is aware and said they're working on a fix.

FYI - I tried every solution presented in their support forum and none worked. I was able to revert back to 4.2 after using CCleaner to uninstall and clean the registry, and that version is is working fine. If you're looking into purchasing Luminar for the first time, download the trial version and if it works okay you should be good to go.

I just found this out too, yssirk123. It's pinned on their forum which can be found here:

https://community.skylum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360009453700-Luminar-4-hangs-on-the-splash-screen-after-the-update-solutions

I did get 4.3 to work by opening it in compatibility mode for Windows 8, though i have a Windows 10 machine. This was a final suggestion way down on the list of things to try. So, it's working again for me as a stand alone and as a LR plugin.

I bought it 2 weeks ago and had no problems with the installation or the speed on several uses. Yesterday, it was like i was working on a different computer. Wouldn't export a shot i worked on for a long time. So i tried to save the "look" and went back in through LR to try it as a plugin (which worked before yesterday also). No go. Plus i had to try twice to open it. Rebooted my computer a few times through all of this. I'm wondering if the video RAM allocation needs to be increased. I'll try that today as well as maybe doing an uninstall/reinstall to see if that helps. My computer has 16 GB RAM, Intel I7 - 3.40Gzh processor, and Nvidia GeForce 750 Ti, - all drivers updated. It should be handling this program.

OK folks, a couple of you mentioned you were interested the results of my very amateur tests.
I purchased the Sigma 100-400C FF lens and the MC-11 adapter, new from Sigma in NY, 14 months ago, and downloaded the latest firmware, as of last week.
I purchased the Sony 70-350 APS-C lens from a fellow UHH’er last week (in new condition).
All photos were shot in sunny conditions in Northern Colorado in my back yard.
I judged them side-by-side on my 2 monitors according to my old eyes.
My grading scale was “0-10” 10 being the best of the two. I’m not posting any of the photos because I’m not going to argue about the findings---I don’t care what anyone thinks, it comes down to which lens I’m going to keep.
Photos were shot with a Sony a6000, using the small spot AF (and a couple manual focuses).
“SS” was set at 1/1500, “A” was auto and ISO was Auto/1600 max.
Targets were a downloaded “Sharpness/Contrast” scale, the nails in my cedar fence, a couple birds on the feeder and some small flowers.
Range was mostly about 50-75 feet to infinity and down to the closest they would focus.
1—Sharpness Sony 10 --- Sigma 10
2—Color Sony 10 --- Sigma 9
3—Contrast Sony 10 --- Sigma 8
4—Closeup Sony 8 --- Sigma 10
5—Weight Sony 10 --- Sigma 5
6—Basic Usability Sony 10 --- Sigma 6
7—Controls Sony 7 --- Sigma 10
8—Auto Focus Speed Sony 10 --- Sigma 8

I’m happy with the Sigma—It’s sharp. It may take a little more work/time to get there than the Sony.
I’m keeping the Sony 90% because of the weight---I old and it’s easier for me to handle, even though those extra 50mm make a difference (I didn’t think 350-400 would be that different).
Hope you find this of some use.

Thank you Lknack. I really appreciate the time and detail you put into this comparison. Yes, they are very different lenses, but close enough to justify my decision to go with the Sony 70-350 over the larger Sigma. Loving this lens!

I have that exact setup (a6000, MC—11 and Sigma 100-400). The lens can be very sharp if everything is right. I have quit shooting bursts, on quick moving subjects, on the high setting because it does not focus fast enough but set on slow it does much better. Since I don’t have the Sony 100-400 nor a newer camera I can’t compare, but for the money I’m very happy with it. I did buy a third party tripod collar for about $50 which looks and works great.
I should mention that I just got a super deal on the Sony 70-350 (should be here on Wed.) to try to pick up the missing fast focus (I shoot a lot of air shows). I will make a test run, with both lenses side by side, to see if it’s any better and let you know if you can wait about a week.

Another Hobie of mine is making these steam punk lamps. I am donating this one to a charity and wanted to make a photo of it before I let it go. I am showing you the original shot and then how I fixed the background using content aware.

First photo if the final edited picture.
Next picture is the original
Third picture is showing me using the lasso tool highlighting the area I want to fill in with Content Aware.
Once that is done I used Gaussian blur set to 200 to blur and smooth background. Image 4
I now duplicated the lamp base and moved it to the top of the layers
Next image is showing the selection tool being used on this new top layer. I had to add the table to the selection then masked.
This brought in the lamp overlaying the smooth background.

Because all this was non destructive I went back to the blur layer and added more Gaussian blur to give the picture the final smooth looking background.

This whole process was used to improve the background then by using the lamp on top again with a mask you get sharp edges. The blur stays away from drifting into the lamp.
