It seems the school was trying to handle this delicately until the guardians (grandparents?) made a big deal out of it. Allegedly the girl wanted to use the boy's bathroom and was discussing a sex change. No matter your views of such things, it's understandable that some parents would not want their children exposed to the situation. The whole mess could have been handled better without making a media event out of it.
