Exactly! I love fish myself but after watching the heron devour this one I think I'll go with spaghetti tonight!

Not fully satisfied with my previous rendition of the Milky Way I ventured back into the swamps to try again. I think you will find this version a bit more colorful. Note the bright spot on the left is the light pollution from Miami which is about 75 miles away.

This is a 5 shot composite in order to shot the vastness of the the Milky Way. PLEASE USE THE DOWNLOAD AND VIEW IN A DARK ROOM.

Thanks for looking.

Great photograph, Larry. Shots like this are one reason I'm sure I'll eventually end up with a Dslr. I love astronomy and I own an original Celestron C11 telescope, which sports a monstrous 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain Optical Tube Assembly. It'd be great to pair that with a Dslr!

I hope everyone takes the time to follow your signature SmugMug link. Superb work!

Happy shooting!

Hi Tony,
and thank you for sharing with us your impressive work!
Selecting the right tool for the given object is a condition for a successful image! I have been enjoying your collections for some time - always discovering something refreshingly pleasant! That is the way our photographs should be.

However, the question I would like to ask you: What makes your Canon SX50 HS design your preference among your other cameras?

Having several cameras of this particular class, I like the choices of a long delay shutter release feature on SX50 HS the most attractive one - if not just outstanding -
considering other cameras offering only 2-10 second delay?

Cheers!
Paul

Hi Paul,

I've purchased every one of my Canon point-and-shoot cameras for a specific reason. My G11 was purchased for its excellent macro capabilities, the SX40 for its zoom, and the SX50 for its speed improvement and zoom capabilities over the SX40.

The SX50 from a technical standpoint is much improved over the SX40 with respect to lag time between shots, finer incremental adjustments in ISO & Exposure Compensation, the extremely effective Framing Assist - Lock, Superfine Jpeg, to name just a few examples. I believe the 12 megapixels to 50x (1200 mm) max zoom relationship is a nice balance for such a small sensor camera.

On the user end of the equation, my SX50 is so dependable that I can pull the camera out of the bag and within seconds lock focus and capture images like the ones of this Great Blue Heron I took today and have included here in this response. These were taken hand-held at near or maximum zoom and have not been cropped. The ability to quickly "focus and recompose" within a few seconds is something I really appreciate with this camera. These are just a few reasons off the top of my head as to why I prefer this crown jewel of my camera collection.

Best regards,

Tony

Tony, I am going to try a shutter release and a tripod with my SX50 HS before I give up on it and send it back to Canon, USA for evaluation. It could be that my tremors have progressed to the point where that is my only way to find out. I used the camera tonight after church at a youth fellowship chili cook-off and silent cake auction. I shot about 20 shots with this camera and 60-70 shots with a Pentax K50. I will download all the shots and compare the success rate between them. I know all the Pentax are in focus but I think before starting I lost at least 25% on the Canon, maybe more. After seeing all your great shots I do so want to be able to keep this little camera in my bag. Your images are proof that this is a powerful tool to have available, I may just not be able to shoot handheld with it. Thank you for your time and the lings to your articles, they are a great resource.

Hi George,

That sounds like a great strategy before you decide to either call Canon Tech Support or send the camera back. I'm sure glad I had my older SX40 with me when my original SX50 failed during a vacation! I'm sure hoping you get things resolved since the SX50 is quite an addition to anyone's camera bag!

These two images on from today.

I would really appreciate your comments and critique

I became too cold to remain beyond sunset which disappointed me; it was a very beautiful day. I wish that I had my new Nikon 150 - 500 lens instead of the Sigma 150 - 500 which I used.

The Nikon, in my opinion is a far superior lens

Thanks

Tony - I am going to bookmark this page and the next time anyone asks about a good camera that is not too expensive, or one for which they won't have to buy a lot of lenses, etc., I am going to direct them to this page to show them the potential, if they get really, really good, of this camera!

Hi Steve,

That's very kind and considerate of you. Thank you very much!
