What is a “Fixed Zoom”?

Well I have a camera bag backpack. Looks just like a backpack but it only holds camera and camera accessories. They come in varies sizes along with varies prices. I found my backpack @ B&H photo.

I'll have to check the brand of my latest photo backpack. I'd been using an Amazon Basics which was only $30 and held ALL of my gear: two bodies (each with a lens attached), two additional lenses, including a 50mm and 180mm, and a flash. BUT, when I switched out the Sigma 17-50 for the Nikon 17-55, it made for much tighter fit. TOO tight, actually. So, I had to look for a larger backpack. Found a really nice one at a local camera shop that was marked down because it was discontinued. Think it's a LowePro model. Nothing about it says "camera gear inside". Looks like a normal backpack. I kept my smaller Amazon backpack in case of traveling where I won't be taking everything.

There are enough tough problems in the world. It's perfectly OK to relish the times that a relatively simple one comes along.

I am really glad that you found the solution to your problem. I am a huge unabashed fan of the D500. There would be no shame if you decided to save your rolls of quarters for one as a reward to yourself for solving the problem.

Yes, but getting approval from "the boss" for such a purchase would be difficult to say the least. But if I keep putting the "ear worm" in her head often enough, maybe… some day… I might be surprised. Yes? It could happen.

This… is so… embarrassing. And I'm ready to accept whatever ribbing you Hoggers care to level at me.

I decided to just… look it up online. Turns out that Bracketing WAS enabled. Somehow. I did not purposely do it, but it sure was easy to just turn it off.

Problem solved. Don't have to send it in to Nikon. I WAS kind of hoping that it would need repair and the cost of repair would be too high for an older camera and I could then go out and get a D500. Oh well…

Anyway, appreciate all of your advice and suggestions so far.

Still not resolved? I have a D7k and that same lens. Great combo by the way. Can you post a couple images here here with metadata from that shoot the other night? Maybe something in the metadata will help resolve the issue.

Take three, one at a time pointed at the same stationary subject. You will get 3 shots at different exposures if BKT is on.

BTW - You do have to set the number of shots and increments using the BKT button plus the front and rear dials.

So, what you're saying is that I may have inadvertently set it to MANUAL bracketing? I'll have to check.

Bracketing doesn't take multiple pictures. It takes one picture. The next picture you take, it could be a half hour later, will be a different picture, at a differnt exposure.

Then you didn't watch that video or you don't know what is happening when "Bracketing" is in effect.

You turn Bracketing on. Camera is set whatever shutter speed. Let's say you have Bracketing set at "3" exposures. Camera is at 1/125. Press the shutter button. You'll get THREE exposures. One at the speed you've set, one just below, and one just above. Not an hour from now. Not next week. But right then and there, at that moment.

I'm getting only the ONE. Therefore… we're not bracketing.

Bracketing turned on?

No.

If it WAS turned on, I would be getting multiple exposures of the same image. I'm not. Only the one. Press the button, the shutter does its thing, and the shutter speed changes after that. One shot. Not three, six, nine… just one. Therefore, we're not bracketing.

So, took it out again last night. And again just now (roughly 10 am). Just shot some interesting looking aircraft contrails against a blue sky. Shutter speed set at 1/125. Immediately after pressing the shutter button, the shutter speed shows 1/60. Last night, it went from 1/400 to 1/2000. It seems random.

Something is going on.

Yes, dials are labeled differently and located differently, but they do the same thing. The op said canon people could not help him, the cameras are different. But they do the same thing.

I have to remember where things are at and how they are labeled when I change from one to the other.

That is not exactly what I said. More of a "Why would I have a Canon shop look at my Nikon?" kind of question. I wouldn't take a Toyota to a Honda mechanic, although all cars pretty much work the same.

If you are on FULL manual, and sure you are not bumping a dial. Repair time.

I'm afraid you might be right. Not sure it'd be worth the cost of repair, but I won't know until I have it looked at.

I agree that this is a most likely scenario. Shutter speed is on the main (rear) Command Dial by default when in Manual.

I’m PRETTY SURE I’m not touching the dial when bringing the camera down but I’ll try to pay attention to that next time.

You don't mention your settings. We're you on aperture priority? Is so, the ss will change with changes in light.

Although I didn’t state in the initial post, I did clarify several times that everything was Manual. No Auto anything.

I am not a Canon expert. But I have used many cameras in my life, including Canon. The "kerchunk" sound could be the lens exiting IS and parking. There are "lots of knobs" on modern cameras. That can be frustrating. What you describe could be a knob in the wrong setting. Do you have a camera store near you that sells Canon? If so I recommend you make a trip there and discuss this issue with them.

You must have missed THIS part:

"Camera is a Nikon D7100 and the lens is the Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED-IF"

Pretty sure that the Canon people won't be of much help.

With total manual setting and auto ISO off, there is either an unknown firmware instruction that would override what most of us would expect to stay put or your firmware / camera now has a "bug" of some sort. A call to Nikon's tech people or the "camera shop guy" is called for. Also remember that the camera shop guy may not have an answer for you while the Nikon tech guys may have seen this "problem" before.

Good point. I'll try calling on Monday.
