It has been well document that it displays the number of shots left before the buffer fills. No assumptions, it is the same for Nikon DSLR and Mirrorless cameras.

You know what they say when you assume.

Oh brother........I have a couple MFT......and I have never noticed this....Now I will have to go back and check.....

Not completely at peace, you still call it an issue. The cameras are designed this way, it's a feature that you hadn't noticed before

Assuming this is an error message, some say it is not, I do not know. But if it is, try resetting camera to factory defaults or taking out battery until any power in camera disappears. Sometimes data can get stuck or corrupted in electronic devices and be a devil to correct. Had a VCR years ago that would not work because of something similar, finally I though maybe programming it would work where manual would not, that cleared up whatever was wrong.

Thank you!

I have three Nikon DSLR's in front of me, they all, on a half-press of the release button show what you are seeing. It has always been there. r = remaining. Stress yourself no longer.

Awwwww....That’s a first! A person with three Nikons all saying the same. Thank you. With every comment I feel more at peace with this issue

Call again and ask to speak to a supervisor. Also have you research the internet thoroughly regarding this problem?

I have a researched it quite a bit on the Internet, to the degree that I’m capable of understanding what I’m reading. To me it’s a camera taking pictures, it’s working. But the fact that I don’t ever recall seeing that before and suddenly I am seeing it on an empty card, and that it’s telling me that apparently the buffer can only hold 11 pictures, I don’t understand that none of my other cameras work this way and I have about six!

I’ve gotten some very good advice from everyone here so I guess I’ll just hold tight. It would seem to me that should be a way to clear the buffer or empty the buffer so that that did not come into the viewfinder but like I said while that may not be the case, I don’t ever recall seeing that when I first got the camera and I have not taken that many pictures with it.

If you have a manual, check the page "The Memory Buffer". The r[#] refers to the number of shots left to take before the buffer is full. The 1.8 refers to the # of photos your SD card can hold. I am assuming you are shooting in jpg. The 1.8 refers to 1800 shots. Switch to RAW shooting and you will see the 1.8 decrease because of the size of the RAW file. If you have the manual look at the page which shows all the symbols and their reference page.

Thanks Ibjed.....!!!!!

What does ‘r’ followed by a number mean?
This is often mistaken for an error code. I’ve had many people ask me what r12 or r04 means when they half press the shutter release on their DSLR. The good news is, this does not signify a problem. It is simply the camera telling you how many shots you have left before the camera buffer fills.

Larry was correct. This is a brief status message, NOT an error. Common to all nikon dslr s. Now go out there and have fun.

I had the smaller version downloaded myself. My initial comments were against the 300+ page D3500, and then I re-read your D3400 reference and found I too had the smaller document (it didn't have the same SD-based buffer chart as the D3500). Just google "Nikon D3400 user manual" and you should get a page directly to Nikon.com. Look at the file sizes and download the larger English version titled Reference Manual.

thanks.........AND......I have googled it before as it was driving me crazy but this time someone said, yes its the buffer and how many shots you can take.......and 'guessed' the person was probably shotting in RAW_Jpeg.....
Well I went into my menu, and I am shooting in FINE. So I dropped it down to NORMAL and now the reading was R17!!!!! lol....so it is the number of shots you can take but really, I don't think it should be there......but what do I know.......obviously....thanks again. I'll try what you suggested.

Let's first explain 'buffer'. When one image is captured, a file of data is transferred from the camera sensor through the computer processing of the camera and the resulting image file is written to the camera card. These files have a size, measured in bytes. Both the camera and the card have a processing 'speed' as measured in how many bytes they can write per second of time. Any camera can handle 1 image at a time. Most cameras can handle 3- to 5- images per second. Cameras begin to differ on how many seconds they can capture consecutive images until their buffer is full.

The 'buffer' limitation becomes more noticeable when 'slow' cards are used or 'larger' files are created, RAW files being larger than JPEG. Only the newest and highest of the high-end cameras are not buffer limited. And even for these highest high-end cameras, they need the fastest card types to match to the write-speed the camera can achieve.

Your D3400 likely doesn't have a technical problem that can be 'fixed' via a repair. That is assuming the R11 occurs only when you shoot and not when you simply turn the camera on. With this assumption, instead look at page 323 of your D3400 Reference Manual. The manual indicates you might get 100 large JPEGs in memory if you carefully configure the camera options. At best, you can get 17 RAW / NEF images. And, these best performance statistics assume the use of a 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-1 card.

How is your camera configured? How many consecutive seconds are you trying to shoot? What model / brand SD card are using? What situations cause the R11 code?
Let's first explain 'buffer'. When one image is ca... (show quote)

oops, the camera didn't come w/ a manual so I down loaded one from Nikon.....only has 136 pages.....gosh, not my day!!!
