Forget it...that's more than the camera is worth. B&H has one used in good shape with a warranty for $230.
get the Canon SX50...it's superb and Canon USA has frequently had refurbished ones on sale for $150....it has full year Canon warranty...same as a new camera...
used that combo for years....they're great together!!
I own the "L" version and give it 5 fingers up! I've heard the regular version is good, but it lacks IS which is desired if shooting macro hand-held. It depends on what you are going to use it for...unless you are doing lots of macro they regular version would probably be all right, especially on a tripod. My advice is if you can afford it alway go "L."
I would buy 2 SX50s...one for you and one for your friend. It's a terrific camera for the price and won't take up a lot of space on a plane and you can probably find a refurbished one from Canon for about $150. I am also a big fan of the Canon $120, which you can put in your shirt pocket and carry around all day with no problem....
the 60D is a 1.6X crop factor body, so an 11mm focal legth would be to equivalent to about 17.6mm on a full frame. I have a Sigma 12-24 which I love and use it on a full frame body (5D, 6D or 1D MK4)....you could use the Canon 8-15 mm but that's more of a fisheye lens. If it was me I would buy an old 5D body in good shape and find a 12-24 Sigma which is pretty close to the 11mm you are looking for.
for several thousand slides I would find a commercial copier to dupe them for you, otherwise you're going to be spending many days at the scanner. I have an old Konica/Minolta scanner that works pretty well but I wouldn't even attempt to do thousand on it. A high quality scan takes several minutes each after cleaning the slide.
you can check the 1D Mk4 at www.eoscount.com. It costs $1.79 for one check on one camera, $5.29 for an unlimited number of checks on the same camera. For the other 2 I've heard you would have to send the camera to Canon to get the shutter count.
I just checked the number of actuations on a Canon 1DMk4 I own and it was at 205396 and still going strong. I wonder, are these figures typical, or what? I have seen a website purporting to report data on the number of bodies with shutters still working or not at various numbers of actuations but wonder how typical the results are. For example, maybe a shutter doesn't work because the cameras electronics went out and the shutter itself is fine. Any ideas??
I'm a real fan of the old Linhof tripods and heads. You can find a lot of them for sale on eBay...frequently in excellent condition. The construction is first-rate and it would be difficult to ever wear one out. The downside is they are heavy.
Stay Away! Deal with proven reputable outfits like Adorama, BHphotovideo, etc. For used KEH is great (although a bit on the high $ side for many items, IMHO).
There's a reason outfits quote real low prices....they are bait and switch and try to up sell you after they snatch the hook in....Stay Away!
