Oh, I forgot. Here is the link to Mike Browne on youtube. I highly recommend this guy. He is one of the best in regards to photography advice on youtube.

Sony is launching a new Sony A7F camera according to one of their higly respected sources. The F stands for film. The camera is E mount and can use all current E mount lenses or adapt to older glass as other E mount cameras do. And this camera is a high fps camera that can do a roll of film in 2 seconds. It is launched as a response to growing demand of film cameras and was designed to be an even better camera than the legendary Nikon F5 that is still in production.

I think pre orders are already taken today at a special discounted Easter price. Go Sony and film

Unfortunately I still have more film cameras than I need so I am not buying this camera but it should be an excellent choice for those who want a high end 35 mm film camera.

Thought Nikon was F mount.

I seen D mounts. What is the story?
Thanks

Nikon is F mount. But they have D lenses and E lenses and G lenses and S lenses. Has nothing to do with the mount.

There is a lot of topics here where people are asking how to upgrade their gear to be able to take better pictures. So there is truly a need for good source of info on how to get the results people are hoping for. UHH is one of the places to look for answers. Youtube is another place. Unfortunately the trend is more in the direction of helping people spend money on new gear rather than helping them learn how to use the gear they already have. And the newbees do not know what to believe, if they need a new gear or not.

Many popular Youtube cannels about photography are run by camera gear salesman with strange hair. Either it is a lot of hair, like they have never cut their hair or they are completly bold or they have boudoir white hair despite not being very old. But most of those strangely haired guys have one in common, they are telling people what gear to buy to take better photos, which in my mind is a kind of strange advice for photographers who do not know what they are doing.

I recently came across a youtube channel that is full of common sense and really good advice about how to use a digital camera and how to compose etc. and they are not focused on selling camera gear or websites, but only helping people get the good results all modern dslr and mirrorless cameras can deliver. The guy behind this youtube channel is Mike Browne. He has a "common" looking hair and that seems to go in line with common sense advice on his channel.

Would it be a good idea to collect in one topic some more of this kind of info to help people to use their gear better and use as reference for those who want to upgrade their gear because they think that is the key to improve their photograpy. The info on Mikes Browne channel alone could probably save UHH members more than million dollars a year in useless gear upgrades.

What do you think about this idea??

Can you control depth of field with a phone camera? That would be critical for my photography.

According to the article about this Huawei P20 pro it can be done. How real life results turn out we still have to see.

I stand corrected. I hadn't seen that lens before. But it's a $500 lens that with the 2.7x crop factor gives an equivalent focal length of 18mm, a small improvement on the 20mm FZ70 bridge camera. But am I missing something? Didn't the OP specifically ask info on a P&S or Bridge Camera? The Nikon 1 is a dslr.

The OP was asking about a point and shoot with 18 mm lens and decent quality. Since I have never seen that wide lens on a point and shoot (in full frame terms) I suggested the Nikon 1 and this 6.7-13 mm lens. But it sure is pricey. However the OP said nothing about a budget so maybe this is a good idea if the price is not an obstacle. And if he keeps the lens on the camera all the time it will serve him just like a fixed lens camera

The Nikon 1 has a 2.7x crop factor, so with its widest lens, the 10mm f2.8, it has an equivalent focal length of 27mm. Anyway the OP was looking for a P&S or bridge camera. The widest angle on a bridge camera is 20mm, like on the Panasonic FZ70 and the Samsung WB2200F.

No, the widest lens for the Nikon 1 is the 6.7-13 mm zoom lens. Not the 10 mm. And it fits the OP criteria of 18 mm lens if he is talking full frame equvalent as I expect.

Up to you, but a friend had a Chinese brand phone which came with a lot of free malware. Apple and Samsung have their own stringent QA, plus Foxcon would't want to lose a multi-billion $ contract for sneaking malware on them. But Chinese brands...??
Sorry, but don't think you can use "China" and "ethics" in the same sentence. Oops, I just did!! Drat...

Everyone knows that China and ethics do not always go well together. However, Huawei is already the second biggest smartphone maker in the world. Samsung is still leading and Apple is number three. I would not worry that a company that big in the market would risk driving away customers by filling their phones with malware.

Distribution of a phone not currently in use in the US is a poor choice of detour for this thread - there is no reason to drive this thread into the Attic.

More important is the progress all smart phone manufacturers are making. Smart phone cameras still have issues - they don't handle motion well, and they're still more wide angle than "long", for example - but they still do an excellent job in the area once dominated by P&S cameras.

I typed this post on my smart phone, incidentally.

Good points. This phone is actually addressing some of the current limitations of cameraphones. It is handling motion well, it is much better in low light with ISO 102,400, it has almost as many megapixels as the legendary Nokia lumia 1020 and it is optically a f/1.6-2.4 27-80 mm camera (ff equvalent). So it is getting close to being a pretty good all around travel camera. Based on the specs this phone is the best camera phone ever so far. And even if it is banned or not sold in the US all major US tech websites have already mentioned it.

Here is a long article about the camera in this phone.

Hi, I'd like to first say that I'm very new to this forum, but am very happy to have found this site, and have already learned a great deal from the posts I've read. Ok, I'll get right to the point...Like many, I've been interested in photography for a long time, but it wasn't until recently that I've taken it seriously enough to attend classes and read everything I can get my hands on. It seems the more I learn, the more I want to learn, so I'm looking forward to improving my skills as much as possible as things progress. My interest began with taking images of the real estate projects I flip (I'm a real estate broker and an investor), but I'm now interested in landscapes, portraits, and possibly street photography as well. On the recommendation of a salesperson I've gotten to know through the years at a local camera store, I recently purchased an Olympus EM1 MII, with two pro lenses...7-14 f/2.8 and 12-100 f/4. While at first I was very excited to own this new camera, I realized, after seeing some of the images taken by other students in one of my classes, that my photos lacked something, which I now believe to be dynamic range, because mine looked flat, while some of theirs seemed almost three-dimensional. Also, since this camera has a M43 sensor, there's noticeably more noise at higher ISO's. I'm sure some of the blame lies with the person behind the lens, but from what I've read, the issue could also stem from the limitations of a small sensor.

While I love the size of my Olympus, I've concluded that I need to upgrade to full frame in order to obtain the results I'm seeking, which is why I'm asking for advice from what clearly seems to be a very experienced group of photographers.

Since I've grown accustomed to the mirrorless world, I first considered the Sony A7RIII, but it's a bit price-prohibitive, especially when the G Master lenses are considered. I even tried one for a day, and felt as though I wasn't ready for such an advanced piece of engineering, especially at my skill level. So, my latest plan is to purchase a used Nikon D750, as a first step into the full frame world, while keeping my Olympus for now as a travel camera, and see how things go. I also looked at the D810 (online, not it person) and since it appears to be about the same size as the D850, which I do have some experience with, I feel the body is a bit too large, and since I shoot high and low regularly, the tilt screen on the D750 is a bonus.

So, my question is, does my latest plan make sense, or is there another option I should consider? I guess I could always take another look at the Sony, and if I skip a few meals and don't date for a while, the economics could work, but there's something appealing about not having the very best while I'm still learning. Features are great, but at the moment, image quality is my primary focus. (pun intended!)

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Before doing anything about switching camera you should look at the settings in your camera. You can make the pictures sharper and the colors more vivid and add more contrast by simple going into your camera menu and change those settings. You could ask the other students how they go about to make their pics look so good.
And most importantly you need to look into processing software for your pictures. That is a very important factor and if you shoot raw and use post processing I am pretty sure you can get the same results you like so much from your fellow students. You could also go to flickr.com and search for pics taken with the same camera and lens you are using and ask the photographers there how they get good results with this gear.

I know from my own experiece that I can get excellent pictures from 10+ years old cameras. The main difference in a 10 year old camera and a new one is the pixel count and how good it is in low light. You have a relatively new camera that can give you excellent results.

It also has to do with intellectual property rights (see Cisco commercial routers and switches) and fears of espionage due to a close tie between the company's founder and the People's Liberation Army. Of course, these latter concerns have been disputed by the company.

I suspect that there is no real "block" other than the issues the US carriers would have in putting in place the material management necessary to carry yet another brand of phone.

We all know today that it is easy to spy on people. Everyone knows the latest facebook scandals and Google, Apple and Microsoft are all known to collect lot of user information from mobile use and to be able to collect anything that passes your mobile phone for that matter. The only thing the Chinese could do that is not already done is to use mobiles to dig deep into government secrets. But so could any higly skilled hacker given that government secrets are floating around mobile phones. I can hardly believe that to be the case.

I did get to Biggs in Charlotte yesterday with my family, about an hour away from our home, they were very nice, but very busy, and me not wanting to take up so much of their time and my families time of doing what they wanted to do as well in Charlotte, I did not get to ask as many questions as I should have, I let the salesman take the lead after telling him what I needed and setting the book of pages that I had printed off from my friends advice here on HHU.......lol.......the only Sony he showed me was the one starting at $2000, way over my budget as far as a beginner, not even knowing if this is going to work out! Then he shows be a big cumbersome Nikon, not even sure what model or price, sorry, but it just didn't fit my little hands, and so then he showed me a Nikon 5600, I really liked it, felt good, looked good and he took few pictures of my daughter right behind the counter with the blurred background with the nifty fifty lens he put on it, I really liked it and the price with the kit lens and 50 lens was in budget!, but was still afraid to commit and still swooning over my beloved Sony that I could no longer afford......and yes, AFTER we left, I had questions that I should have asked and cameras that I should have test driven from all the notes that everyone on here so kindly suggested! What happened to me! I was so worried about everyone else's needs, that once again, I took the back seat, (ha, literally, I rode in the back seat the whole time as well) maybe just the mom in me and I don't mind, but after my daughter is back in school from spring break this week, I am going to have to go again, preferably alone, but will have to take my 4 year old niece, whom I babysit.......and hopefully test drive a lot more, Best Buy will be a lot closer for me and I may call up there first to see what they have and hopefully go up there to look. Thank you again for reaching out to me, do you have any advice on the Nikon 5600? Thank you again so very much everyone, this has been the best way that I have received help on this matter by far!

The D5600 is a good camera but I think you should stick to your Sony plan if you want to become more of a serious photographer or professional in the future.
