Which brings up the question of why “refrigerator” instead of “frigerator”?

Talk about kicking the can 2000 years back down the road. Here’s one explanation “The word refrigerator originates from the Latin verb refrigerare which was derived from the Latin adjective frigus, meaning cold. [plus ‘re’ meaning ‘again’]

Yea, I received a bunch of them for a while. Bit Coin, Crypto, ...
I've even "bought" computers for people in other states.

Unless you look at the actual email header info, the email in the "From:" is 99.999% spoofed.
They're just using the PayPal image(s), which can be easily copied.
(And why would it come from a gmail account and not a PayPal account.)

I mark them as spam and delete them.
They probably want you to call the number so they can "credit" your account.
Of course you'll have to give then the appropriate account number(s) to get the "credit"...

And guess what else, I don't have a PayPal account.

“Forward” is the quickest way I know to see the sender’s actual address. And then the email is set up to actually forward to the people who handle spoof at the company or agency (if the company or agency provides that service).

Of course in 2015 National Geographic Sociery sold their media to 20th century Fox, Rupert Murdoch.

Can you imagine how deep in crap (both horse and otherwise) we would be if everybody switched back?

We don’t have to imagine. Lots of articles with plenty of details.

My son and I had Covid a couple of weeks ago. If I hadn't taken the test, I would have thought it was a mild cold that went away quickly. It began with a one-day mild sore throat. Then there was a bit of coughing and a runny nose. In about five days, I was back to normal. Same with my son. If we had gotten this a year or two ago, it would have been a different story.

One thing I learned is that I could test positive for months because the RNA could remain in my system for a while - days, weeks, or months. I'm not going to waste a test kit on myself. At this stage of the pandemic, it's better to avoid it than to get it, but getting it doesn't have to be fatal.

The lingering positives from the home test are really troublesome. Especially for those of us who come in close contact with children too young to be vaccinated and (other) older people who may be especially vulnerable.

I am also concerned that the fact that vaccination protects against the worst effects of the virus will lull people into letting down their guard (masks, hand-washing, etc.). Every infection seems to be an opportunity for mutation. And natural selection will favor the mutation that is vaccine resistant.

I've been using one for years - currently LastPass. The problem is that they don't always work. Apple is especially bad. I have Apple passwords printed on labels stuck on the front of the iMac. There are so many instances where LastPass does not enter the password because the site doesn't give it the prompt it needs. I've developed a system so I can figure out the P/W for a site, but that's recent, so I have hundreds of old passwords that don't use that system.

True, but with a password mgr there are usually “reveal” and “copy” which fill the gap for those sites with incompatible (or incorrectly structured) log in sequences. 2 factor means having my phone or email available - a bit more work, but worth the security.

What I dislike are the robot-blocking distorted text of CAPTCHA and the blurry photos of whatever it’s called. I rarely get them right in the first (or second) try.

Yes like I said just get a book that opens and lays flat. Try Merriman pro. They have a lot.

Could you provide a location for “Merriman pro”. There’s a Curt Merrimack printing in Pierre SD, but it doesn’t look like the one you might be referring to.

Thanks.

Some years ago we had a homeowner who jacked up his house (probably for a new bottom floor) and dug a large hole underneath for a basement. Did I forget to mention this was on a typical suburban development plot? The edges of the new basement hole weren’t properly shored and started collapsing into the neighboring lots. The cribbing became unstable. But that was all relatively irrelevant - except to the neighbors. No permits (they say). I missed the tear down and demolition. It was quick, but it must have been a nightmare.

Good Morning

A challenge. We have VERY occasional beaver and muskrat. Always swimming. Almost always at a distance. I don’t see them often enough to have a sense of size as a differentiator. I’ve heard that swimming posture differs (beaver = only head exposed, muskrat = head and body exposed). Unless I see the tail, I can’t tell the difference. Any other differentiating field marks - that are not based on relative size?

We did a similar trip - a month later than yours. There was a period of two days where we could doff our long underwear. So take gloves you can wear and still handle your camera. There were daily opportunities for hikes, kayaking, and Zodiac trips. I couldn’t handle the hikes anymore (knees, too) Took my 7D with a 100-400 zoom, 24-70 zoom, and a 50 fixed. Lots of pictures! Amazing landscapes with unbelievable depth. The boat cruised at night, with dawn at about 4:30 (as I recall). As a result there were very early morning landscape opportunities that few except the watch saw. They had coffee available! Enjoy yourself.

For years, I've been buying those little button batteries from Amazon. They usually arrive in an envelope from Brooklyn. No complaints. The battery in my 20+ year old calculator finally died, so I looked on Amazon for LR1130 batteries. I ordered ten for $3.49. Just out of curiosity, I looked for calculators, and I ordered one for $3.48. Amazing. The first small electronic calculator I saw cost $400. If I had ordered one, they would have sent me a nice briefcase, as well.

As I said, those cheap little batteries have never been a problem. They are always brand name, and I store them all for years before using them. The alternative would be driving into town and back (one hour) and paying that much for one battery.

When I started my brief time in the Navy in 1972, naval aviators were paying over $400 for (HP?) hand calculators with Polish notation because they were so much easier to use while flying than the circular slide rulers. They could hold (as I recall, 2 values in memory). By 1975, a calculator with similar capability was available on the supermarket end cap at checkout for $39.95.

Any attempt to alter the ecosystem to benefit one species (us) is almost certainly doomed to failure.
The same goes for geo engineering our way out of a global climate crisis.
I don’t know what will happen, but we won’t like it.

And yet we continuously alter the ecosystem for our benefit it by our very presence. It was interesting to read in the book 1491 that indigenous populations in the Northeast US set fires to thin the forests to make them easier to traverse and more amenable to the deer that were hunted for food.

BTW Returning to the original post, I’m not a fan of anything genetically modified by laboratory gene manipulation - but I have no problem with changes introduced by careful selective breeding. Even manipulation of characteristics by selective breeding can fail - witness the German Shepherd.

I guess it's what you get used to and the important thing is that you're comfortable with whatever method you use.

Ditto. Especially when BBF is coupled with exposure lock, so recomposing has no effect on either focus or exposure. (Canon 7D, the original).

You are asking for a miracle. Oh never mind you said thoughts not proofs. Thoughts anyone can have no matter how bizarre. I have yet to have a proof from a left leaning person. Lol

Back ‘atcha from the other side of the coin.

I assume the facts in the video are true since they mirror problems in numerous other industries dealing with countries struggling with extreme poverty. Car manufacturers - as have a number of cell phone manufacturers - have to examine and manage supply chain sourcing to eliminate exploitation and help those struggling countries normalize their economies. By “normalizing” I mean what the US has accomplished over centuries: child labor, compulsory education, fair employment practices, unions, strikes, and investigative journalism.

The elements of complete lifecycle costs and impact must consider everything from extracting raw materials, to manufacture, to operation and use, to disposing of products at the end of life. Where do Prius batteries go when the reach their EOL?

All the consumer has to go on is price - and good investigative reporting. And the consumers’ power is in their wallets.

BTW For EVs a particular concern I have is the source of the electricity used to recharge the batteries. “Greener” doesn’t count if it merely shifts pollution to a different, less visible source.
