Walking at my "happy" place early in the morning and found a family of raccoons waking up to start their day. It was a bright, sunshiny day. They were nestled down in the cavity of an oak tree branch.

Most excellent shots Girls! Over here on the left coast we have the red shafted northern flickers and a pair occasionally visit my feeder. But they are so nervous and fast in flight I have never caught a shot with the colored tail showing. Good stuff!

Thank you, Larry! These are located in a small park by a lake...second year I have seen them.

Nice series, I love it when you can get that splayed out tail. Great shot. I would be so excited if I ever found a nesting tree to watch. Fantastic.

They are beautiful...can't wait for the babies!!

Exceptional shots! My brother is building an owl house as I type this. I am hoping to see "Hootie", a Barred Owl that I saw and shot last April.
I would be thrilled to death if she were to see and use it for her nest. How far do you think you were from this one? Which lens?

I am so bad at distances but think I was probably around 75 feet from the owl. It flew low in an oak tree in front of about 25 photographers. What an experience. I have a Nikon 7100 with 200-500mm lens. Shot this in aperature priority, f/5.6, 1/50, ISO 800, at 460mm. It was 7:30 am so light was low. Good luck in getting "Hootie"!
