For a lot less money than a new laptop try upgrading your software to Creative Cloud. CS6 is 5 years old - Adobe has done a lot to improve performance in those years. This will not be money wasted as you would surely not want to install CS6 on a new computer if you still feel the urge to spend dollars.

I agree with most of what others are saying, using the 100-400 on the crop sensor - FOR THE DAY.

For night safari runs I'd put the 100-400 on the FF. You should drive very close to some resting game. You won't have any light beyond what the driver has on the vehicle so you don't need the extra reach of the 160-640 effective length. The 24-70 would then be mounted on the crop camera for "family shots" of nesting lions (if you are lucky enough to stumble on to such a scene.)

Good luck.

Does anyone know of a service where I can send an external hard drive to have it loaded to a cloud service? I have about 1.5TB of photos and videos, the upload speed would take forever. But I can copy all of the files to a WD or Seagate external device.

Thanks in advance

Another shoe shooter - welcome to the club.

When I shoot panoramas, I usually shoot it at least twice. Once left to right, the second right to left. Of course in the first case I shoot the left show first, and in the latter I shoot the right shoe first.

A lot of this discussion is spent explaining methods to sort and keep the many digital images we capture in some easy to identify plan.

In the PD days (pre-digital) I was traveling quite a bit. There were so many new things to see and photograph, I needed a way to jog my memory about what I had captured. So after a few years of mystery photographs I developed the following system.

I carried a small notebook and a fine point marker. I tried to make a note about my subject matter and then photograph the note before taking the shots. Sometimes a picture would present itself before I could prepare a note. In these occurrences I would make my note after the shots, but I would draw a left facing arrow to remind me the note applied the pictures before the note. Over time I refined the technique to include the date (there was no metadata on film negatives).

Now in the digital era, I use the same technique. Yes, the date is in the file properties, but when quickly looking at thumbnails I can easily determine the date of my shots. I also “burn” spacer shots between changes of subject, by shooting a picture of my shoe. Silly sounding, but it has saved me time as I scroll through the many shots we seem to take with digital, and a deliberate shot of a shoe does not look like an accidental exposure.

A notebook and marker seem so "old school", but it works for me.

schneiderp007,

Maybe I'm missing something. Why don't you use your older Tamron lens on the new body?

I do not like the iPad solution as they make it difficult to read/write from/to common USB drives. Most all android devices have a micro USB port and with a Micro USB to USB (On-The-Go) Adapter Cable you can connect to any thumb drive or portable hard disk. Or connect a SD card reader to the cable and read directly from the card used in the camera - and manipulate any type of file. There are also many inexpensive dual tipped USB on one end Micro USB on the other thumb drives. (yes, there are a few USB/lightning deual tips devices, but thye are more expensive and with less flexibility.)

Yes many iPad's have better resolution but in a 7"-10" format it is hard to see the difference in typical lighting environments. Give me conveniece!

Thank you Susan From Vermont,

You have some valid points that I will pass on to him.

Before he can "go to the websites of schools he wants to explore" he needs a list.. It is difficult to determine what schools offer such programs - that is the help he seeks, to make the list.

I have a friend who turned to me because he knows I have a wide circle of camera/photography knowledgeable friends (You guys).

He is looking for a college program in photography that continues to teach the use of film cameras. Any help fellow readers?

Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

To remove ALL edits to a raw file, simply delete the .xmp file associated with the image. The raw file is not changed in dpp, the changes and edits are saved in the auxiliary file that is created the first time you begin edits - delete the .xmp, edits are gone - start over (carefully this time)

Ok, I have no experience with your software, but I just looked at the manual online.

The picutres and sound are in a WORKSPACE that is defined in the PROGRAM somewhere. You can edit your slideshow on the computer where the WORKSPACE has been defined.

To VIEW the slideshow outside of the original computer, it looks like you need to PUBLISH the show into a VIDEO format. This is the file you can view on a TV, post to the internet or give to friends. You are not giving out a slideshow, but a finished VIDEO. Video files range in size and quality from VGA (an old PC standard) up to 4K. When you PUBLISH the show to a video format you must decide the quality you want based on the anticipated output/viewing devices.

I cannot tell you how to do all of these steps, but this will be be process you will need to learn and follow.

(What I told you earlier about formatting the USB applies to copying any file in excess of 4gb)

I assume you are using a windows machine.
Your slide show file is probably more than 4gb.
Standard USB drives usually are formated with FAT32, which has a 4gb size limit.

s o l u t i o n:

Make sure all files on USB drive are copied safely to somewhere else.
Right clik on USB drive icon
Select FORMAT, set to "NTSF", leave Allocation unit size to 4096 and perform "Quick Format"

Try copying your slide show file to the USB drive, all should work well.
