Rode makes several excellent shotgun mics for most any budget. Also consider a seperate recording device such as the Zoom H1 and synching up in post production.

Ditto others that really appreciate your information. LR has so much to offer and you seem to be hitting on the most used. Great stuff.

Save your money. I didn't and bought the H4 first. Better than awesome, but also considerably more money. I'll use it if I ever get around to studio recording. For now, I want to hook up a groom with a lavalier and a reocrder in their pocket. The H4 is too bulky for that. Buy the H1 now. You can always add the H4 later if it is not suiting your purposes. You'll be happy to own the H1 regardless of how you end up.

Hi and welcome. I just bought the 60D and will relegate my t3i to backup position. I think the Zoom H1 is an awesome choice. I bought one for exactly that purpose. I also would recommend the Rode Boom that sells for about $169 as another good choice. I get great sound from both, but as you probably already know, the H1 retails for $100 and I think offers a bit more versatility.

Just paid 899 new, no lens, no grip. Sounds like a reasonable deal. If the grip is a Canon, then it's an awesome deal - "reputable" and return policy assumed. Congrats and enjoy.

I watched an interesting video on Adorama TV on this very subject last night. The suggestion was to go to one of the stock photo sites and search your destination. There is usually enough info about the photo for you to determine the location. The article goes on to suggest using one of the mapping softwares that offer "street view" to actually determine the spot the scene was shot from, for what it's worth.

If you like the Pelican case approach, but find that beyond your budget (as they were mine), check out Harbor Freight. I purchased two hard cases on sale at $24 each. They come with pull out foam allowing you to customize for your gear. They're pretty large - 24 X 18 X 7 I'd guess. I found it a great solution at a price I could live with.

The answer to your question (and to a large number of life's other questions) is MONEY.

I installed Veveza 2 and Define 2 on my Win 7 machine this weekend. Viveza went in just fine, but I had the same problem as you with Define. I went to the NIK website and did a software update to the latest version and that solved the problem for me. It was frustrating but eventually worked.

They are also called "dead cats". Who thinks up these names. But, as Festina said - external mic and some type of windscreen are essentially essential. Does the d5100 have an external mic input? If so, Rode makes a boom mic for about $150 that does a real nice job. Otherwise consider an external recorder (Zoom H1 - $100, or Zoom H4n - $399) and bring together in post production. All of these solutions require the additional of a dead cat / rabbit fur / etc.

Apparently lots of bug fixes and a few new features. You can now create a photobook and save as a jpeg. I'm still having trouble with the "edit in PSE10" feature but that may be me (I doubt it). Anyway I have a workaround for that problem and Lightroom is so awesomely powerful that I can overlook this. It's rare that I need to do any additional post processing beyond LR4.

I have a brand new copy of Photoshop Elements 10 that came with my video software. Never been installed. It's yours for $50 and I'll ship it for free. Shoot me an IM.
