It is not a macro but is a close focus lens with maximum magnification of .34 and a minimum focus distance of 17.72 inches. This makes it a really good walk about lens.
I use the Nikon SB-900 or the SB-910, I would not use the better beamer. Instead use MagMod's wildlife kit. If you send me your email I'll send you a PDF I wrote about using flash with birds, my email is Larrys@bex.net.
Just watched it and got some good tips. I had come to the some same conclusions after extensive testing with my Z50, Z6 and Z7 cameras. I am looking forward to a Z camera that will have the AF of my D5.
I have one and I have it set for back button focus. The settings for the Z 50 and the same settings that I use for the Z 6 and Z 7 so look for info on them. The AF and tracking on the Z 50 is very good. Some photos of it for flying birds are here on my website: Photos 613-651 @ https://gofish.smugmug.com/Nature/Guntersville-2012-2013/i-Ggw2NjF Click on the round info button at the lower right of the photo to see the lens info.
