Most of those "supplemental" plans don't cover the portion that Medicare Part B are supposed to cover. I know that from practical experience as we have just went through that with my mother-in-law. Fortunately my wife, who is a retired medical professional from the Mayo Clinic, was aware of the situation and was able to keep her mother as an in-patient for the requisite 3 days. If they had kept her for "observation" she would have been shit out of luck and would have had to pay all expenses out of her own pocket. Her supplemental insurance would not have picked up an even penny .
