Yes. Raw is sensor data "plus" metadata. You cannot print sensor data. There has to be some PP instructions applied which is derived from the stored metadata. The camera executes these instructions when it creates a JPEG. Right out of the camera means raw data that has been "cooked" by the camera and not by the photographer.

Well I feel that I can "cook" better than a camera. That being said you have to look at how you set up the camera and what you meter off of. Digital has helped more people into photography and JPEG has made their pictures look better without any PP. I'm from the old school, over 50 years in film and you had to get it right, didn't have CS5 back then.

I think you hit on the answer to your own question. People don't PRINT as much as they used to. Many have this misconception that they are losing way too much IQ if they work with JPEGs---just think of all the image info you are tossing out!! Oh my goodness. What will those who have a monitor zoomed at 500% think? However, I can print two photos, one made from raw and the other right out of the camera, and nobody would be able to tell which was which. Of course, like you said, nobody really cares what format you used. However, I digress... Don't want to start another JPEG vs. raw debate.
I think you hit on the answer to your own question... (show quote)

You say you can print two photos, one from Raw and the other right out of the camera, do you mean JPEG?

Raw would be somewhat "flat" without PP and Raw lets you select (play) with the white balance and I see the difference all the time when looking at pictures on "FLICKR". Just a thought.

Wake up people! This is a game the president is playing and if he has to cheat or even lie to win he will! This is about winning the needed seats in November 2014 and that is why he is willing or trying to get a ONE year extension so you will be happy just past November. What happens after the election, well we will be right back where we started. Do you remember what he did the first two years with full control, God help us if he would have it again the last two years!

PP, nothing new at all! If you studied photography at all then I'm sure you have heard of or I hope seen some of the work done by the master photographer Ansel Adams. Talk about PP, it would take days to dodge, burn and many other "tricks" in a darkroom to produce just one picture!

Today if you want to go all out there's HDR.

To me the trick if you can call it that is to do your magic and after your done no one can see that you have done anything! If its obvious you have over done it. In CS5 you have the option to use the sliders to reduce your corrections. Rule one for me is to never tell the person if you are "shooting" people what you have done to enhance their image!! Please try to have some fun with your photography, I sure do!

That shot is too good to put on a post card. It needs to be bigger, much more like a calendar shot! I'd like to try photographing it in a storm with maybe a purple sky!

The dark pond works very well due to the contrast! The detail in the feathers is excellent and the colors of that duck work better against a dark background. Look into the 1.4 extender, works very well on that lens. Great shot!!

I agree with "XKaliber" and would add that my eyes go right to her arms, way too bright. No catch-lights in her eyes and you couldn't add enough fill light to her face without blowing it out. It does say sad, very sad and very well!

From what I read it looks like your not doing your own printing. I wouldn't be sending my files to Costco or any other place like that. Try to find a professional lab and work with them. I worked with my lab for about a month and I now get the same image back as I see on my monitor. The lab I use has an economy and a professional side of the house. I started out sending the same files to both sides to see the difference, I do color calibrate with "x-rite" every 30 days. You should in time be able to get the results from the economy prints. Are you shooting in raw and doing all your corrections. Now look at the ambient light in your room , I don't work in the dark but have very little in my room. I hope this my help.
