I've just learned the phrase "ethical optimization." Apparently it means "lying with photography."
A friend is selling her house. Unhappy with the realtor's pictures (too dark), she asked me to try. I gave her three dozen beautiful images and thought I'd done a good job, making the images looks like reality. That was a mistake. Real estate photographers employ the concept of "ethical optimization." Super wide lenses. House looks huge. A normal fridge appears six feet wide. Everything looks bigger than life.
Next time I can match the effect, I think. But what do you think of the idea? If everyone else is making the houses look better than they are, I'm putting someone at a disadvantage by aiming for realism..
Thoughts?

We just experienced this looking at a condo for a friend of ours who in the market to buy. The photos of the condo all shot with wide angle or fisheye. She was shocked at how much smaller the place really was. Nice digs but the condo is only 800 sq ft but was made to look like 1500 sq ft. I would never take photos that misrepresent what it is I am trying to sell. I saw that done with a Nikon lens. The guy shot all around the lens except the tag because he was trying to sell it as a new version of the 70-200 VR and it was an old model lens.

Well Jim, we are limited by our knowledge, but our imagination can take up places our knowledge couldn't Dream of.
After 11 years of heavy Wedding and Portrait photography (about 1200 of the first and a thousand of the 2nd), I was
getting anxious to do something new. A GF I was living with had seen a few random Nudes I had done and suggested
I do that, exclusively , for a while, and NOT for money- that way I could maintain full control of both subject AND
subject matter. Well, that was 45 years ago and times were much different then, so I had hundreds of willing and eager
models. My GF was correct; it was the avenue I was needing to exercise that 'pent up' Creativity I had looked for.
The overall result: while I have, to date, photographed over 5,000 very happy clients, I have never received 'Public
Recognition' for my commercial work. However, in 1977, a representative from the city of Carson City, CA, called me
and asked that I submit a dozen of my "Figure Studies" (apparently, she could not pronounce the word 'Nude') for a
Public Showing of a new-to-be-opened government building. There were several other photographers showing their
'wares', but I was the only one asked to show THAT genre. That was kinda a 'High-Point' I my career.
So, bearing out my thought about Creativity, 'When in doubt . . . let it out'!

The beauty about this site is you can share some of your artistic side here on UHH in the "Nude Photography, Boudoir Photography, NSFW, Discussions and Pictures" under the ALL SECTIONS link. I am 62 and unfortunately we both have seen a change in times and thought patterns in the area of artistic nudes. I guess the lesson is to find beauty in all we can while we are still above ground. :)

Welcome! It is awesome to hear from our octogenarians on here. We can all learn from those that preceded us professionally. Technology changes but light and composition doesn't. We are limited by our imagination. At least that is what I have learned thus far.

I like it because you have captured an orb. Can you duplicate that circle of light in other photos (such as a dust speck on lens or sensor)? If not that is a classic orb of energy.

The 810 and 850 will require good lenses to get what you paid for. While any decent lens WILL work, if you want to see what 36 Megapixels can do, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens at a mere $2800 is your best. Finding a previous version of that lens will also get great images at lower cost.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens at $1800 is another great choice for a shorter zoom. The newer version: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is even better as it has VR. "Only" $2400. IMO, putting low-end lenses on that body is like putting retread tires on a Ferrari—Those "work" but at the expense of lower quality.

Now, if you don't print larger than 8x10 or 11x14 then cheaper lenses will be fine.

One of the best things you can do to ensure sharp images on that camera is to use a tripod as the fine pitch of those pixels will expose less-than-perfect hand-holding.

Agreed. I have many lenses and my walk around is a Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6 VR. But when I am going shooting in earnest I take my 24-70 and 70-200, long shots 200-500. The new 1.4 teleconverter works well on the last 3 lenses mentioned.

I have a D300 (DX) and D810 (FX). The D300 takes great photos still. The D810 has caused me to experiment and push myself further because of all the bells and whistles BUT... the D300 still takes as good a photos. It is the user who pushes that button. Ever consider looking at your lens collection and seeing what you may want to add in order to expand the capabilities of the combination? When I bought higher end lenses my game changed tremendously as my shots were cleaner with less light. D3400 is a nice camera with all that said.

I did a wedding recently (for free) as the agreed upon photographer. My brother came along with his camera as a second camera. When we arrived the wedding party had arranged for two other people to take photos (free) and video. Two things...

1. Someone has to take charge and call the shots. (That should be the one who is paid or asked to lead)
2. It is very confusing for the bridal party if there are two cameras shooting the same setup as they don't know where to look even when you direct them.

I got some wonderful shots and each wedding is a learning experience. However, it is much easier to just go and enjoy the wedding if it is someone you know. And there won't be any hurt feelings if you don't get the photos as they want them! Good luck!

I am taking my daughter to the zoo next week. I own a Canon 100MM - 400MM prime lens and a 100MM - 200MM Canon prime lens. The 100 - 200 lens has internal zoom where the 100 - 400 has an external zoom. I also have the Canon 1.4X old style extender and the 2X III newer model extender. My question is what lens outfit would you guys recommend? I am leaning towards the 100 - 200 with either converter since the zoom is internal. Both lenses weigh about the same so this does not matter. Any advice would be great.

I took a Nikon D810 and Nikkor 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 and it was good. I wish I had taken my 70-200 2.8 as I had some indoor shots that were extreme low light and had to crank up the ISO and had some slight noise in the photos which was expected. It might be nice to have a monopod if the zoo will let you use one. Tripod is impractical and probably not allowed. Good luck! The photo is taken from about 75 feet away and cropped.

I would start with a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 then build up and down from there. 85mm is good portrait. Then a 28-300 3.5-5.6 for an all around lens. 105mm has a good macro as does the old 200mm. I would try to build quality rather than quantity, meaning lenses that are historically known for sharpness and low light shooting. I am an amateur photography (35 years practicing) so you may get better ideas from the pro shooters. Welcome to UHH.

The cheaper Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6 VR is also a fairly good lens. The photo on my avatar was taken out the window of an airplane at Denali. It is fairly shop and you won't pay out the nose like a 2.8 lens.
