I am new to digital photography and have never owned a film camera. I only crop for affect. I do not worry about losing part of my pictures when I print. If my paper is to small I change the size to fit so it wont clip. If I need a picture printed large I call a pro shop and find out how large they can print and set the size accordingly. I use a Canon 7D. It is rated at 18 mega pixals and if I print to its max size the picture is larger then most people would ever need. If I need something larger I have a program that can make it as large as I need {barn wall size}. My camera will change aspect ratio size and provide Photoshop with that in formation. It dose not save the picture in that ratio; the editing software does it when it loads the picture. I must be missing something in this disscussion. I dont understand what people are talking about.

A WB card is not for exposure - not directly - but to ensure the whites are indeed white. That, in turn makes other colors more accurate as well. It is used to mitigate the effects of light sources that add a color. An example would be in an area with incandescent lighting (tungsten). By shooting a white card or a gray card, you can neutralize that unnatural color and make whites white. Nikon and Canon have different ways to do this, so check the manual. Also, be sure to take the camera out of this mode when you leave that area!

If your subject is lit by mixed sources, i.e., daylight and tungsten, you can only balance one. Some will tell you to shoot RAW so you can correct this. You cannot - you can only correct one source at a time.

What camera do you have? Do you want to set custom wb? I use Canon and have learned lately to use the custom white balance some. I normaly shoot in raw, so I do not worry to much about the white cards or white balance. You manual will tell you how to use the card. I usually find some thing white in scene and use that for the light setting in that situation. You Tube has some good clips on the subject.

I use A 7D. or a 60d. Iam just starting to use raw. I had to get a bigger hard drive. I am a new bee to photogphy, about 6 months now, so I am on a steep learning curve

What's the problem?

I have never used a white balance card and needed some hand holding to get started. What software works best? do you need special plugins?

Another Photoshop like program is Serif, Photoplus X5; easy to use and great company support. They also have free trail versions that you can use as long as you like. Then there is a program called Zoner Photo studio 14. It
has a very good user interface. They also have a free version.

If you need a quick and easy Photoeditor try Picasa by Google. It does both jpg and raw. It will straighten a picture faster then any program around. I collect imaging software. At one time or another I have used them all. Picasa is the only program that I have not taken of the computer. One of the best features is that it is free and so is another of my favorites Gimp.

Besides being challenged as writer it now appears you have reading deficiencies, as well. Now you prate about my inability to use a camera in a given assignment. I asked about the business end of keeping track of floating clients without benefit of a shooting station, not how to use my camera. You say you started off in film photography. What was it, dageurreotype? Well you should have stayed there.

Thank you for answering this individual. Everyone has to start somewhere. My son is doing sports photography for the first time this year. The pros try to run him of the sidelines but his reputation for the shots he gets has gotten him in with the coaches and the school administrations. In our state, only certain appointed pros get to sell photos of state play of games but the coaches let him in the press box because he sell his work framed for half what the so called pros are tring to get. And everyone says he is the best around. One of his favorite lens is his Sigma 50-500mm until the night gets to dark then he uses his120mm-300mm f2.8. My son has only been a photographer for six monthes, but he spends at least 8 hours per day in the books. He is now the team photographer for 5 teams. Yea he is not a an ap guy but the local paper does not mind using his work
