Why not use the nikon software ViewNX that comes with camera? If for some reason you don't have it, it can be downloaded from nikon.

If you don't want to use a tripod why not try a monopod. I use them for my long lens when photographing mountain bikers on the trail. It really works, as does a fast enough shutter speed as others have said.

Both Scan disc and Lexar have free recovery software if you bought or were given the correct memory card.

I use a 80-400 for ski races and mountain biking, so larger subjects, but I find with a high enough shutter speed and auto ISO and a monopod that competitors at 50 yards or so are sharp. My shutter speed can be 1/1000 to 1/4000 on ocassions.

Sometimes the locations and speed of competitors does not give time for me to do that. I could prefocus but that takes away the opportunity to get the best image compositionally in terms of the competitors actions. I want an image of each competitor in each run and don't want to risk not getting the shot.

Many thanks for all replies, I had not thought about the 16-85, so I will consider that.

I have a nikon D7100 and 80-400, 18-200, 50/1.4, all nikon and a Tokina wide angle lens. I take skiing and mountain biking races and find the 18-200 lens autofocus slow, the 80-400 is fast enough and I have to use the 50mm and tokina lens more to be sure about them as the focal plane is so narrow.

Any suggestions on fast autofocus lens for my consideration, especially to replace the 18-200, but other options also welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I also read the manual then put it aside but knowing there was sections to dip into when needed. Practice practice practice is the only way to be sure about all the controls and how they work. I had a D90 before so know many of the common controls, layouts etc. but find I do look up bits and pieces as required.

It's the new 80-400mm AF-S, not the older 80-400mm D, correct?
I am consider replace my broken Sigma 50-500mm with either this Nikon AF-S zoom or the new Tamron 120-600mm. I have read some review about this Tamron, they said the AF on the long end is a bit slow and some time hunts and misses and the image is a little soft.
The price are a great different too, suggestion?

Yes it is the new 80-400. I suggest two things 1) rent the lens to try it out, and 2) look at the DXOmark measurements for super zooms, you might find that there are other lens that will meet your needs. Eg nikon 70-300.

I use a nikon 80-400 zoom for ski races and mountain biking and find it quickly focuses and produces some very fine and sharp images. I recently used it for some track and field events and again it performed well.

I moved from a D90 to a D7100 and the improvement in indoors shots is worth it. I shoot ski and board races both indoors and outdoors, at last I have the clarity and white balance I need with no colour casts.

I have had my Apple MacBook and iMac since 2006 but this means they are 32 bit and software is moving onto 64 bit so I may have to replace the iMac soon. However, everything works and any problems have been dealt with by the genius bar. I can use the MacBook in studios or on location to process images using Nikon's ViewNZ 2, I also use Sofortbild (free) to tether my Nikon.
