Hello

I bought myself a D3000 a few months ago and recently added a Nissin DI622 II.

I was at a friend's house and a two year old grabbed a guitar that was sitting on the couch. I had my camera in hand at the time and was lucky to grab this shot.

F5.6 1/50s ISO 400

To be perfectly honest with you the compo is wrong.Yes the hand is cut off which is not good but the bigger problem is not enough space between the face and the edge of the frame. The #1 rule of portrait photography is always keep more room in front of the face than behind the head.In my opinion to save this photo you should crop tight leaving only the face.

I agree with your assesment, but do you don't feel that if he recropped and included the hand it would maybe give enough space in front of the face? The back end of the guitar is part of the whole pic.

Unfortunately, there is not much I can do for this one. After looking at the RAW, I just didn't get the bottom of the hand. I think I was trying to avoid a bunch of stuff on the coffee table.

Here is the uncropped photo.

You are correct, pick one thing to work on and nail it down.

When I started to take this hobby seriously, I stopped PPing the poop out of my stuff and narrowed my asking for CC down to one topic.

I started with "how is my focus?" and once I started getting postive feedback on focus, I moved on to exposure, skin tone, etc. Currently when posting for CC I ask for feedback on my B/W conversations as that is what I am trying to nail down.

Baby Steps.

I think I might have shared my "before" photos from when I thought I rocked the world and PP'd all my images in an effort to make it look professional. If I haven't and anyone wants a good laugh, I will gladdly post them here.

That sounds familiar. I'm always taking photos of family and friends. At first I was running all sorts of filters, making everyone look unreal. I thought I was the best.
These days I do minimal PP and laugh at my older shots.

I've shared my "before" shoots here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-6983-1.html feel free to take a peak and laugh your behind right off. I giggle everytime I look at one image that I thought totally rocked.

I've read that post. I can see how you've improved but I didn't see anything that would make me laugh.

Allow me to post my worst, followed by something I am more proud of.

Taken with Minolta Z10. Digital Camera noise removal X2 and a filter or two.

If I had my way, all of my shots would be B&W. I do get some complaints from family who prefer color.

Here is a little girl at a party; she did not know that I was shooting her.

Trying to use the flash to black out the background. Getting better but still needs a bit of work

I have nearly 7000 photos starting 12 years ago and capturing everything from the birth of my kids up to recent times.

I’ve never made a large print of any of my photos but may do so soon. Most of my recent shots are for church and parties—they end up on facebook.

I agree ....the hand in the frame would have helped the shot....But I love the lighting.

Thank you. I have flash triggers, though I rarely use them. I read an article about directional bounce photography and usually try that. Funny thing is that every room I walk into I am looking for appropriate places to bounce a flash--even if I left the camera in the car.

Nice shot, would have liked to see a little more space at the bottom to totaly include the hand.

The B&W is very nicely done, composition is good, with the exception of the hand.

I still have the RAW, so I will try to recrop. I usually crop to 8x10. I will try a free crop to capture a bit more of her hand.

Hello,

I am Henry from Hemet, CA. Been viewing the forums for about a month--looking at the great photos.

Thought I'd join in on the fun.
