It has been said that variety is the spice of life I think it is nice to have both.
Just a few months ago while in the local used photo shop, a lady customer had come in and bought a bag full of B&W FILM !
Yes film, black and white film to be exact.
She is a professional and apparently shoots a lot of weddings and she said that it is not uncommon; actually it seems she gets quite a few obviously; requests to do some of the work in B&W and also requests to have the work done with film ?
These are the customers requesting this.
I have heard of this also from other people. I am not a pro so I would not know first hand why, but this is what I hear and see by just kicking around.
The store was telling me this too, he can't film on the shelf because there is a demand out there.
Me, I do not have any answers for you. I again think it is nice to have both.
As you can see there is A LOT of lovely B&W photo work out there.
My two peso's opinion.

Good point. This is why I used the Pencil tip which would slide down to the bend and move it from there with no problems, but I do not think this would fit in the camera. I am not even familiar with his model. My D200 this would not work, it just would not fit in the very narrow space the pins are in.

I took have a CS card in my cam. Now back in the day while working on computers, I would come across a bent pin the CPU chip connects too. If it was bent over and touching another pin, I would gently move it over with something and use the tip off a mechanical pencil to slip over the pin and gently bend it back up. The pen tip fits right over the bent pin.
Only if the space allows this in the camera. I am thinking a very skinny tweezers might get in there and move it back.
Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Pat.
I am just like you. I joined this forum back in November I think, and there is A LOT of useful information and wonderful people on this site.
Let me just throw my two cents in this since I already see many very good replies to you.
Me, I am left handed for the most part. I found the Nikon fit my hand the best, NOW WAIT !!!!!!!! just last month I was in a Best Buy and checking out the new cameras and found that some Canon Models fit my hand much better than some Nikon models and vise versa.
In todays world there are SOOOOOOOOOOO MANY choices and SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH information out there it will make you dizzy, it did me.
Where I live there are used book stores, Half Price Book stores are good. I bought a few book on Digital photography and just basic P also.
An overwhelming abundance of information on the web; books, DVD's, training and learning sites, you name it, it's out there.
I can only remember back to the early 70's and started with a Pentax. I am retired now and like you, just trying to catch up and get started all over again.
I looked at all the new gear out there today, and man-oh-man, is there a ton of really great stuff too. I just tilted from it all.
I wound up buying a used Nikon D200, yea it's an old one, 2006 model. It was bought new buy a pro and had it serviced and checked by Nikon yearly.
She upgraded and I got this camera with battery and changer and few accessories for $147.00.
My old Nikkor AF lenses,, I have two, fit right on it and work. So a small investment got me in the digital age beyond the point'n shoot stuff.
Pat, I think you will find that you will get up to speed sooner than you think. As one the other guys posted; the functions like shutter speed etc. control are the same. The basic photo skills we need are the same regardless of a film or digital.
Again, Welcome to the forum.

Lots of good replies here for you.
Me.
I would save them from the dvd to a folder on the desktop.
And then, like the other guys have said, right click a file or picture file and go to properties and see if you can change the file name extension to something else, like jpeg or whatever it will accept.
I have used VLC viewer and it seems to open just about anything. It is a free download and works very well.
It has opened files for me that nothing else could.
Also just google around and see if there is any info on converting these.
good luck,
b

Oh boy, I knew your post was going to stir up the litter box. So; I want to say something positive; being that today we have SO MANY GREAT cameras with features for anyone I would venture to say should meet anyone's
needs.
It is very nice to have all these options from Auto to fully almost unlimited manual controls on so many cameras today.
Even inexpensive cameras have both Auto and Manual controls.
So, whatever works fer ya, have fun with it.
The Pro's and well seasoned shooters offer a treasure of knowledge here for anything.
I find using the manual controls fun to experiment and learn with.
Now cars and trucks, ahhhhhhh yes.
Well I have full size truck and two Miatas.
One Miata is an Automatic which worked well as my daily driver to work and back and general workhorse.
The other Miata is an SE with the 6 speed heavy duty manual tranny.
It is nice to have the options, both fun to drive and both will get me there.
My 2 cents.

Welcome to the forum. I am new also, joined a couple of months ago. This is a great site and a wealth of good knowledge and information.
Please keep in mind EVERYONE started out as a beginner.
You will see here a very wide range of experiences and focuses the members speak from.
As in ANY online forum there are going to be a few assholes which should not deter you. There are way too many great and wonderful people on this forum with an abundance of feed back which will help get you going in any direction you want to go.
I need not offer any of my thoughts since so many good responses have already been posted. But I will say out of all of them, yes, read your cameras manual and learn the functions.
Just like learning to drive a car. Jump in and start having fun.
Again, welcome to the forum, you will find this a treasure chest of good people and support.

OMG !!!!!!!!!!! Dude, the replies to this questions are just mind numbing.
This is the age of internet. Research/ search the items and price it out.
What do you need ?
What do you want ?
DO YOU NEED IT ?
Be careful of these 'bundles',
I see them but do not fall into it.
It is a sea of options.

The replies are very correct. There is so much online you can find anything you need. Also, I have visited the Half Price Book store(s) here is the DFW mid cities area;Texas; and there is a large selection of books right there on the shelf. I am new to this forum myself and have found it to be very helpful and informative. Happy searching,,
Bruce.

I spent two weeks there last October. I just had a back pack, I had an iPad, small Canon PowerShop and my phone. I was all over the country and avoided the tourist areas. NO problems at all. As another post mentioned, the people are very warm and friendly. One of the first things I realized on my first day there was : I need a better camera to capture all of this. I go and stay where locals go, anywhere I go. I felt safe even in the 'shady areas'.
BUT ! Never let your guard down and be vulnerable ANYWHERE. And I mean anywhere meaning here at home.
I do not speak Spanish and this is the common language there. I used the Google Translator, it's free. It worked best on the iPad and was a life safer. Many of the younger ones have learned and are learning English but still a good translator program will a life saver.
My visit was impressive and this is what encouraged me to upgrade and update into Photography again. I am 66 and retiring in a couple of months. I plan on going back and plus other counties in the area I visited too.
This is the reason I joined this forum was to learn and get up to speed with the latest techo gear. Yes, feel comfortable taking your DSPLR, I wish the hell I had one with me on my visit there.
If you can go North also and stop in at David and then drive up to Boquete.
I went in October which is the wettest month so prices were better and considered the off season. I do not know what it is like during the 'tourist' season but there is very much info in the web out there.
My thoughts,

Well spoken and so true,
as is all in life there are some we just have to ignore.
Seek the good and the good will come to you.
As for me being new, I am open to honest and intelligent criticism/opinions as a learning process.

I am new to this site and just able to reply since last week. I am sorry this happened to you. As with most, if not all sites, there are those 'people' out there that do this stuff. I have been told there are snobs in the Photo world too. I belong the the Miata forum for several years since I own two of them and for the most part, this is most polite and friendly forum I have seen. A co-worker of mine is Jeep fan and driver and he tells me the Wrangler forum(s) are the worst, just full of A-holes. It is very sad that a few can stink up a good site as this one is.
I am new because I am getting back into photography more again since I will be retiring and traveling more. Meaning, I need to upgrade my gear so this site could be a useful and knowledgeable source of help.
I have seen some ??? well, wierd comments made here but I ignore these and look for the real people with good things to say.
Please do not let these A-holes run you off, stand up and just ignore them or give them a good slap back,
My pennies thought for the day Brother,

Well spoken bobbyjohn.
I forgot to mention in my long post that Linux does have these drawbacks and it also looks and feels more like MAC OS.
That is why I mentioned if he can get a cheap used box and try it on that or even virtual mode.
I like having two boxes so as not the wreck the main Windows 10 box, Linux is very expendable on the junk box.

Hello,
I have been reading these posts for some time now and the knowledge very helpful. I have never replied or commented before but I feel like now is a good time since I have been through what you are going through.
I am a computer tech. in a major hospital system so I have seen about everything from before Windows and MAC hit the scene.
I have used Linux and find it easy and stable to use.
Here are comments on my experiences:
I bought a used box from the outlet store a.ka.a ,(bone yard), which sells refurb's puters and such. I paid 40.00 bucks. I added my hard drive and an extra stick of ram. I installed Linux, the Ubutu version I downloaded. Also you can get a free disk from the Linux magazine from the book store, B&Nobles etc. These mags have some good info to get you started with. A very cheap way to check out a system and hey, I used it to download movies and watch movies without all the spam, pop-ups and crap you get from Windows.
On your Windows system, OH BOY !!!! WELL lots and lots of good comments and they are all good too.
One thing you can do is set up the Windows restore or recovery point. If it takes a dump or gets infected or just messed up. You can restore it back to a previous restore point in time. Either one day back or one week. You can set this up . This has saved my booty lots of times. I also use USB flash drives and an external SSD HD to back up and save EVERYTHING on.
Create a USB recovery stick just in case the HD craps out, you can even clone your HD to another HD as a copy back up.
These options are less expensive if not at all.

Now the comments on the MACs.
These guys are also right too.
Many many pro's and just duffers prefer the MACs because of the reason you read here.
MAC's are know for doing very good for Photo editing work.
MAC products are all top shelf hardware because the build the whole thing.
Pricey, yes.
But you get what you pay for.
At home, while just laying back and browsing, I use an iPad pro almost exclusively.
I am considering getting an MAC Book also before retiring in the next month or so.

Both systems are not bullet proof.
I think your Windows system 'may' need some clean up and maintenance. If you bought it from a store then it is probably loaded down with bloat-ware. This is crap that is installed by the maker, HP , etc.
I install Windows from a disk on a clean HD and install only what I need and want.
I do not have new computers. I buy mine used and install my stuff clean.
If you do not want to work with you computer this way, take it to a reputable shop and have them 'service it' or clean it up.
Either way I think you will come out with a better working system.
Whew ! this is a lot of typing.
good luck,
b
