My kids, their spouses, my grandkids, my wife and I are all going on a Disney cruise. I have warned them that I'll be taking lots of pictures. I'm particularly interested in a picture of the 15 of us in that central area that all cruise ships seem to have. You know: the area with the chandelier and the staircase.

Any way, I have the Canon T3i and the Canon speedlite 423ex flash, and the Canon EF 24-105 L lens.

I'm always looking for an excuse to get new equipment.
Should I stick with my 24-105 or would an investment in the Canon 50mm 1.4 prime yield a better result?

Lots of suggestions on how to spend money on new equipment. If you're looking just to take this group shot and not trying to blow it up larger than and 8X10 then how about something simple requiring no money. try an experiment with no flash and simply crank up the ISO, your aperture to say 5.6 and take some test shots in some similar situation. In manual mode you be able to read your meter and see what ISO will bring this home.

8-) 8-) 8-) Your EF 24-105 will fill most of your needs. Extra gear equates to extra care. which you can spend on the kids instead. Remember, the photographer is rarely in the picture. Be part of the group, and have a great time! :XD: :XD: :XD:

Why is the photographer not in the shot? The t3i has a 10 sec built in timer. Even if you don't have a tripod a table or some such will get the job done.

I have a few 18x24s that have been hanging in a brightly lit place for about 5 years now and so yellowing so far. Don't know about the 8.5x11s - hanging in a bright livingroom and no yellowing with them either. Of course they aren't in direct sun light either. And the lamination in the sizes is different also. The 18x24s have a 1.5 ml layer while the 8.5x11s have a 3 ml layer. As I said, have seen no yellowing in either yet.

Merci!!!

I have anything that's going to be hanged laminated. I bought a $35 laminating machine and 8.5x11 laminating sheets (100 to a box) and do my own. For my 18x24s I work with a company down in Nashville, Tn. They do all my enlargements and laminate them for a very reasonable price. Laminating I've never had any problems no matter what the weather does. Plus the lamination brings out the details in a photo and makes it look more richer. If you want to check them out here's their web address - www.shortrunposters.com

Lamination is plastic and unless this process/material has vastly improved, won't they yellow after a few years especially in heavily lit areas?

Almost the same path Bob. I had Ae-1 also and used it manually for years. Kids, job, etc and the camera when on the shelf. Enter Digital and I bought a 3 Mpix Elph just to see what it was all about. Floored by the quality. Moved quickly to Entry level Xti and my photography spirits were rejuvenated. When the 5DIII came out I said to hell with inching up and jumped on. Got some L glass and now that I'm retired, life is good. If I could only teach that camera composition. :) About 95% is shot manual from day one. I can only shake my head about the quality and I'm;m sure in a few years it will be considered and Instamatic.

The only way I would vote for my own picture would be if I felt it truly was the best. I would think the reason for the contest is to see how the masses see your photograph. Always voting for yourself and being the only vote, suggests you have a higher opinion than everyone else. As harsh as it sounds, it also suggests that like most of us, we all have a ways to go.
