The background subject may appear sharper because of two things: 1. Movement of the basketball person can cause blur
2. The difference in lighting is also an issue. Low light and movement = blurred images. Hope this helps.

If your budget is $2,000 you can get some nice equipment. I personally use the Canon system.

A Canon T4i body with a 24-105mm F4 and a 70-300mm F 3.5/4.5 is a good start.

Then start taking a lot of pictures... just keep shooting, downloading and evaluating your results.

There are a lot of free training videos on U tube to learn photography. A great resource. Good luck!
