My OM-1 has two card slots so every image is saved to both cards. Even so, every evening I still copy that day's shots to two ssd. My process is that I first save from the sd card to one of the ssd and then change the ssd and again save from the sd to the second ssd. I also only reformat the sd cards if I run our of cards. I much prefer to have too many copies than none due to a bad card. It takes under 30 minutes a night and I do not even need to be there except to change the ssd.

While Paul is correct one could carry lots of sd cards, I use a different method and have for several years with slight iterations. Using a smart phone or tablet, an on the go plugs with an sd card slot and usb port and two ssd. Daily I backup that day's shooting to the two ssd. I prefer this method to carrying lots of sd cards and keeping track of them. Also, I always keep the two ssd in separate locations.

There are pros and cons to high quality close up lenses and extension tubes. To begin with close up lenses add more magnification to long lenses and extension tubes add more magnification to wider lenses. Th website Cambridgeincolour has calculators that will provide exact magnification increases. I use both extension tubes and the Canon 500D diopter (no long available new) depending upon the lens and needed magnification. Also, one of the cons with extension tubes is the need to remove the lens and teh possibility of introducing dust to the sensor, especially outdoors.

How can you be surprised at anything TSA does.

I doubt that it was TSA that kept the monopod from getting on the plane. The OP was in Argentina and they have different rules and requirements. If one is that a monopod cannot be carried onto the plane you have the two choices as the OP wrote.

Auto-ISO is an auto-exposure mode. You can set boundaries for high and low ISO. It can be used in conjunction with other auto-exposure modes, such as aperture priority.

And now I ask you, could there be any conditions, scenes, events, where using auto exposure modes make sense? if yes, what are they?

One situation using manual and auto ISO is wildlife where you want a fixed aperture and a fixed shutter speed but the light can change drastically from shot to shot.

I stumbled across it using Photoshop. I let it run it didn't take long, a few seconds, (M1 16" MacBookPro") But it wanted to save the result in DNG format. No thank you. So I saved it as a PSD file but it didn't look like it saved the noise reduction step.

By saving it as a DNG file it preserves all of the RAW data. What is your objection to the DNG?

I agree about the OLYs, but they are drenched in "featureitis" that required you be permanently grafted to the instruction manual.

You are not forced to use all of the terrific technology built into the camera. Use what you want and ignore the rest.
The OM-1 offers many great features that you do not care about but some of us use several to many of them at various times. What you consider fearuteitis such as ProCapture I consider essential for some wildlife photography.

Enjoy the camera and ignore what you do not use.

I run LR and PS on a Win 11 i7 with the RTX 2060 GPU and 64 GB memory. The LR Denoise runs from 10-15 seconds start to finish and is faster than opening either Topaz DeNoise or Photo and running it. SO, far I prefer Topaz for the added sharpening in one stop. However, LR Denoise is more convenient. Time will tell which I continue to use. Srill testing.

Thank you so much for your informed response. I am not a ‘pro’ by any stretch, and sometimes confusion reigns supreme. The photo I attached was taken at f16 1/500 sec. I noticed that both the rx100 and rx10 only go to f11. Would that be an issue with getting the same results.

I noticed some negative feedback on the battery life. Do you see that as a problem?

I don’t mean to take up too much of your time, but really appreciate your opinion.

I know that they are different cameras, but do you have a preference? I actually like the RX10 as a more robust camera.

The smaller sensor cameras also have smaller actual focal lengths. The quoted focal lengths are full frame equivalent. Therefore at any equivalent focal length and f/stop the smaller sensor has more depth of field. So, the lack of an f/16 is not an issue. For instance on my OM-1 f/8 at any actual focal length of 40 mm is roughly equal to f/16 at 80 mm on a full frame camera.
BTW, I changed from Canon to Olympus and it is lighter, faster and packed with interesting technology that helps me make better images.

Having transitioned from the Canon DSLR environment I have the EM-1 Mk II and the OM-1. While it is perfect for me. Based upon the words you chose to describe the camera, I doubt that you will ever be happy with it. Go get a extremely heave Nikon D850 and a super fast 50 mm lens, lug it around all day and be done with it.
All systems have trade offs, you want a "marvelous" antiquated technology camera so get it and be happy.
As far as battery life perhaps you purchased a terrible third party battery. My EM-1 battery life is generally in the 400 shot range and my OM-1 well beyond that.

My solution works perfectly. It’s inexpensive to boot. Used it all over the world. With added benefits of wifi bridge and a portable battery back up. Could not be easier.

I remain flummoxed why the one answer to the question is ignored.

How about because it is not the ONLY answer and not even the least expensive answer?
We all approach back up differently and several ways are effective. You enjoy your way and that is fine but not everyone will.

I would question whether the usb-c port on the ipad can deliver sufficient power to power the card reader and SSD or USB stick without using a powered hub. Not saying it won’t because I’ve not tried it but that and the extra draw on the ipad battery would be a concern to me. Do you have one of those and is it powered…which eliminates the concern?

I have no issue driving the SSD with my midrange Samsung tablet and there is not a noticeable amount of battery drain. I have used flash drives and/or ssd for about 10 years with no issues.

Our backup system is simple. We travel with tablets and phones. Using an OTG plug with an SD card slot and multiple USB slots and 2 2TB SSDs. Using the tablet's or phone's file manager app I copy from the SD card to each of the SSDs. I simply select the folder with the images and copy them to the SSD. The file manager asks if I want to overwrite prior copied images, click no and the process is relatively quick and automated. Small, light and secure. Dropbox etc only work if you have connectivity, frequently we are in locations that do not have it. By having two copies we can put them in different places for security.

I currently use Lightroom (OK, not too well) and am trying to learn Photoshop. My understanding is that if you do work in Photoshop on a RAW file, you permanently change the file. Firstly, is this correct? and second, does this mean you should create a copy of the original and work on the copy so you don't "corrupt" the original??
Thanks!

No, when you are finished editing in PS, the file will be saved as either a TIF or PSD. Therefore, your original RAW file is unchanged and still on your computer in its original state and location. Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is the same engine as the LR develop module. When you open a raw file in PS it will open into ACR where you can make all of the changes that would be made in LR. When you either save the changes or open the file into PS the program creates a sidecar file (.XMP). with the information about the changes made in ACR. The .XMP file contains the same information and acts the same way as the catalog for the individual image. Actually, if you open the raw file in LR after using ACR all of the changes will be visible within the picture but will not show in the left hand panel nor will they be in your catalog.
