That's a good one. Made me laugh...for a short while we had a pet raccoon. Mom made us get rid of it.

Joon, no apologies necessary.
But, how long do you plan on a foto career? Are we talking six weeks, or sixteen years? My point is, what's the rush? Nothing wrong with trying to learn everything you can, especially when you have willing guinea pigs. There is no shame in using Auto, and there is no prize for using manual.
How many guys are so h*ll bent on using manual, they practice and practice but never learn to compose? If you never know composition, what good is it to know your camera. My point being that one can get to know how to handle a camera easier when they aren't completely preoccupied and completely dependant on that little exposure needle. For me, composition is king, it's what gives you WOW shots, not the mode you used. When your WOW shot is hanging in a gallery, nobody will care what mode you used!
I'm not trying to discourage you from learning, since the best photographers know EVERY mode their camera is capable of, and then which to apply to get that perfect composition best. I hope you're getting my drift. Know also, that this is also only MY opinion, your mileage may vary. ;-)
Good luck
SS
Good luck
Joon, no apologies necessary. br But, how long do... (show quote)

I hate to say it but ss is spot on.... most of his photos are posted in the local crapper......he talks a lot but never posts a photo...... he's a retired hippie.....that's an oxymoron... how can a hippie retire.

You don't say what camera you have, but start with auto and try to quickly move to the semi auto functions. On a Canon they would be Av (aperture priority) and Tv (shutter priority). On a Nikon these would be A and S modes, respectively. In aperture priority you select the aperture you want and the camera determines the correct shutter speed for a good exposure . In shutter priority you select the shutter speed and the camera selects the appropriate aperture for a good exposure. Aperture priority is generally used much more often than shutter priority. Once you are comfortable with the semi auto features you can try fully manual settings if you so desire.

You need to learn and understand the exposure triangle of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Various combinations of these three functions allow you to do much more than just get the correct exposure.

thanks, but i never said i was confident. i said i wanted to learn. i would like to move away from auto. i am finding some good info/ guidelines on line. perhaps i posted too hastily. that would be due to nervousness.

however, these practice sessions are with people i know who are willing to be part of my learning process, for which i'm thankful.

apologies to all the pros out there if my question is too moronic.

Joon,
not many pros on the hog...but a lot that think they are......go for it....... don't let the "Pros" discourage you.

You are to be congratulated for the confidence you have in your ability to deliver on a topic in which you appear to have zero knowledge. Good luck.

Having said that, my advise is to put the camera in AUTO mode and let it do the exposure work for now. Maybe you will get some shots worth keeping.

We all start with zero knowledge.

The D7000 (and I think all Nikons) have a grid that can be displayed in the optical view finder.

How is the auto focus and fps on the K3? Is it fast enough for birding etc..?

I've had a k3 since march the focusing system is very much improved. I was skeptical of sticking with Pentax but didn't want to spend thousands on new lenses. I'm really starting to love the k3 it's a whole lot of camera for the $$$$. The fps works great but you will need the extra battery to get it's full performance. I use mine for bifs and it works fine.
