I'm an amateur photographer using a Nikon d7100. I take mostly landscape photos while hiking. I purchased a Benro travel tripod ($225.00) for a recent trip. The tripod itself worked fine but I was frustrated with the head and especially the quick release mechanism. Can you recommend a tripod head that would suit my needs? Also, what is the purpose of an L bracket and should I buy one in conjunction with a new tripod head?
I know there are much better ( and more expensive) tripods out there but my pocketbook and experience level is not ready for such equipment.
Thanks.
I own a Nikon d7100. I bought the 10-20 prior to a recent trip to various Western States. I was very pleased with it's performance. Excellent IQ, sharpness, and fast silent autofocus. I appreciated its light weight. I had tried other Nikon's and their build quality was excellent but the price/weight factors brought me back to the 10-20. I was a little worried about the plastic mount. However, I use ultrawides selectively and had no issues. At one point, I inadvertently dropped it on a rock outcropping. Luckily, no damage at all. I highly recommend this lens.
Great information. Very helpful!
Thank you!
What lens and camera did you use? Nice pics btw
I think these are excellent
Excellent! Love the "twist"! Nice perspective!
I own the Nikon 10-20P and love it. Very sharp, quiet, and fast. And light. I also own the 18-70 and it's pretty sharp but it has quirks like auto focus not working at the wrong time. I'm looking to upgrade to a 16-80 or something similar. I also found I need VR for my shaky hands.
Thanks for the info. Ansel is probably my favorite photographer. I'll check these books out.
I tested both lenses in a camera shop . I wanted to test which felt better in my hands and how the lenses mechanisms and focusing "felt". I didn't test picture quality. I ended up with the Nikon and am quite happy with it. I used it extensively on my trip out west. When the lenses test out pretty evenly, I go with the name brand.
Many thanks for the terrific insights, references, and suggestions ! Some wonderful photos too! I'll definitely avoid in camera settings. As someone recently said, the older you get , the more you realize how much you don't know.
I'm appreciating black and white photography more and more . I have never shot monochrome ( I believe that's the correct term). I'd greatly appreciate suggestions , hints, and guidance from this very experienced group. I know it isn't as simple as removing color from photographs. I'm curious if using in-camera settings is the way to go. By the way, I shoot with a Nikon D7100.
Thanks!
Thank you all for your suggestions.

I can't thank all of you enough! I knew I could count on UHH to provide so much information and share their experiences. Lots of research ahead this weekend.
Although I like my backpack to store and carry my equipment, I often really need just 2 or 3 lenses and a few accessories for a short term excursion and the backpack is just to bulky. I use a Nikon d7100 with my largest lens being a Nikon 70-300mm FX. I'm thinking a vest of some sort would be ideal to carry a few lenses, water, snacks, etc.
I'd appreciate any suggestions!
