Yes! My new son in law ended up in a hospital after a nasty GI infection over there. He may have gotten in Laos, but he finally gave up and went to a hospital in Thailand as kept getting sicker. He spent almost a week there before he was released to come home.

Wow!
Its hard to be carefull all the time.

Northern Highlands, Dalat, Pleiku, etc. If you can get an aircraft, the Delta with its rice paddies full of water can be beautiful from the air, or on the ground in good morning/evening light.
You might find this site useful: https://www.selectiveasia.com/vietnam-holidays/weather. I saw it snow in Dalat during my first tour in '64-'65. Safe travels! :-)

Thanks for the link. It may change my timing.

Missed the event in 1969, when my orders were changed to a public affairs unit assignment two days before departure to Danang.

But, there are over 58000 reasons why I'll never go there.

Yea I was not there but I get why you dont want to go back.
I missed that trip by weeks myself.
Thanks

Da Lat in the Southern central Highlands is absolutely beautiful and comfortable. It is called the place of External Spring. We were there in late November And the flowers were in bloom and it was short sleeve weather. Do not remember a problem with mosquitoes.

Da Lat was on my list

I was not "blessed" with an all-expense paid tour in Vietnam, I served in Germany for 30 months -- it was hell, but somebody had to do it! My brother served there and goes back now twice a year and loves it. He is over there now and likes to go into the Central Highlands and visit with the montangards (spelling?) in their villages (not the tourist villages). Have a good trip!

I would love to see the real deal. Villages

I spent several weeks in Vietnam and Myanmar this past spring. Don't worry about things to photograph as the entire country is an absolute dream to shoot. Hanoi is especially lovely and I will definitely go back. Nihn Bihn is not far from Hanoi ( two hours by car) and very beautiful. I stayed at the Hanoi Metropole, one of the nicest hotels in Asia. I highly recommend it.

Thanks
Havent figured out hotels yet.

Just a side note: while Larium (Mefloquine) is a propholaxis against the mild or moderate forms of Malaria (and does have a list of very unpleasant potential side effects), it is not a preventative for the more serious form. When I was in VietNam in the late 60s, the army used Primaquine which was provided in the mess halls. The dirty little secret was that while it would prevent the mild/moderate forms, it merely suppressed the symptoms of the serious form until the unlucky soldier that contracted it returned home after completing his tour, to discover he had malaria after discontinuing the drug. I never used it, relying instead on mosquito repellent and sleeping under netting, which is still good advice.

I planned on it as I have been in jungles before.

Hi Skip, Get back to VN every new years. If you would like , I would love to give you a call, or you call me. I can talk, and go on for hours, but my typing slows down after about 150 words. So let me know and we can set something up. John Alongi

A call would be great
