I suggest you research whether the update is something you actually need!

I really only wanted the distortion control update - Nikon instructions said to update camera firmware first.

You are correct in citing the removal of the lens for the distortion control update. My Sigma stopped autofocusing properly after the c 1.04 firmware update. I did try loading the firmware 2x with no change in results. As I mentioned my Nikon lenses were fine. So I called Sigma, got on line immediately with a nice tech guy who said, based on serial number and age (2013 manufacture) it needed a lens firmware update. That was it!

It is recommended to perform the firmware update without any lens attached.

I don’t recall seeing “remove the lens before installing firmware” in the instructions Nikon provides. I will check again. After the update all my Nikon lenses worked properly, only the Sigma would not autofocus.

My Sigma 17-50 would not autofocus on my D7100 after I installed the latest Nikon firmware. I called and then sent the lens to Sigma where they installed a free lens firmware update. The lens now works properly. So it cost me about $9.00 shipping and 4 days without the lens.

Nice photos - I love the seashore. The Sigma Ronkonkoma office is too far for me to drive (~150 miles round trip) especially with another Nor'Easter predicted for tonight. It's also cheaper for me to mail rather than pay the bridge tolls to Long Island and back!

I think I understand that a firmware update to a camera is really a software update to internal programs. However, I don't know what a firmware update to a lens is unless it is a physical modification which obviously can't be done "online." I recognize this may label me as a real amateur, but would someone politely explain it to me? Thank you.

Here is a cut and paste from the Sigma website about a lens firmware update available that will correct an overexposure issue when using a teleconverter on their 150-600mm lens.

We would like to announce the availability of a new firmware update for the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports in Nikon mount and the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary in Nikon mount. This firmware update can be installed using SIGMA Optimization Pro.

The lens firmware update corrects the phenomenon of overexposure when the lens is attached to the SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1401 on Nikon Digital SLR camera “D500”, released by NIKON CORPORATION.

For customers who own the following applicable products and also SIGMA USB DOCK, please update the lens firmware using SIGMA Optimization Pro.

For customers who do not own SIGMA USB DOCK, the lens firmware update will be provided free of charge. Please contact your nearest authorized subsidiary/distributor of SIGMA.

Thanks for the suggestion - however, this lens is not user updateable - so off to Sigma it goes!

Just spoke to Sigma in NY - they will update the firmware for no charge. I need to mail it to their Long Island office (too far to drive). They said they do same day firmware updates so probably 5 business days without the lens. I will let you know the outcome when I get it back.

This morning I installed the latest firmware updates for my D7100. The firmware is C: Ver.1.04 / released 2018/02/27. I also installed the Distortion Control Data Ver.2.017 / released 2018/03/01. It was a successful update. All of my Nikon lenses work properly. However, when testing the Sigma I discovered that autofocus was no longer working. When turned on with the Sigma attached, the control panel on top of the camera starts blinking, and the lens doesn't focus. It doesn't do anything. I can manually focus, but autofocus doesn't work. I checked all settings for the lens and camera. As I mentioned my 3 Nikon lenses work fine. Only the Sigma is affected by the update. I will call Sigma Monday. I would appreciate any advice - BTW I really like the lens and its OS. Thanks, Jim

I had a G9 for years - and I loved it except it was a little slow for low light/evening photos. It developed an issue where it would not power up. I googled "canon g9 will not power up" and it appears to be a common issue with the G9's where a tiny screw comes loose and shorts out the power module. Canon won't touch it and I didn't want to attempt to fix it myself (there are videos on line showing how to change power module). So it now sits on my shelf.
