I beg to differ. I believe that mine is a juvenile Cooper's.

Your bird, your call 👍🏽😄

By the way, I for one (among many others) sure enjoy the frequent humor you post.

The only other hawks we get around here are the red shouldered hawk which are a lot bigger. This one that KI shot I believe is a youngster and not full developed. Thanks for the comments and yes send me a photo of yours.

My guess is that your hawk photo is of a red shouldered hawk. We have a lot of those around my house here in San Antonio too. It’s hard to know for sure if yours is without seeing the topside of his wings to show the reddish portion. The chest of both the RSH and the Cooper’s look the same … at least to me.

Here’s the Cooper’s Hawk I got a few weeks ago.

Very nice! I love seeing birds of prey. You captured its regal, stoic look. It posed nicely for you.

One point though … and not meant as a criticism in any way. This doesn’t look like a Cooper’s Hawk to me. It has the speckled wing feathers instead of the Cooper’s Hawk’s more solid coloring. Also, it’s missing the extra-long tail feathers of a Cooper’s Hawk. If you (bcheary) like, I can post a photo of a Cooper’s Hawk I came across on a recent hike near my house.

This is great advice. These are two of my favorite cameras. I have three a7Riii bodies and recently traded in my a7Riv for the a7Rv, despite the financial hit. I never fell in love with the iv but quickly did with the v. Also, I bought the Kindle version of Friedman’s book for the v. It is really good. So, reading Desert Gecko’s post really rang true for me.

(Note: I do write this realizing how blessed I am with not rich but well-off resources, unavailable to many. I do remember those days of necessary restraint.)

Using an a7Rv guide would probably not be helpful and might confuse more than anything. I recommend two things: Downloading the "Help Guide" from Sony's website and purchasing Gary Friedman's camera-specific book. I think they run around $30 and are available on Amazon and on the Friedman Archives website. His books cover everything, and for most settings he explains when, how and why we might use them, plus his preference.

I'll add that aside from Friedman's casual and personal style, his books really don't have anything that the Help Guide doesn't -- but the Help Guide explains camera operation in a sterile, no-nonsense technical style. Oh, and the Help Guide has much more than other Sony documents, much more than the User Guide. If I recall correctly, the User Guide even refers us to the Help Guide for certain topics, generally advanced settings.

The link to a downloadable Help Guide can be tricky to find, so I grabbed it for you: https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1710/v1/en/print.pdf

BTW how are you liking the a7Rv? I'm about to upgrade from the a7Riii and am torn between a used (but mint condition with warranty) a7Riv and a new a7Rv. I just can't decide whether the a7Rv is worth $1600 more than the a7Riv. The fully articulating screen and in-camera focus stacking are for me the most compelling reasons for choosing the newer camera, but I don't think that's enough to justify the expense.
Using an a7Rv guide would probably not be helpful ... (show quote)

I’ve used it many times. You do get an immediate credit equivalent to the amount of tax. Tax is paid but you do get credit for the amount of that tax.

My only issue is that I don’t seem to get timely notice or statements, either paper or email, of when my payment is due. Fortunately, I have logged onto my account before the due date and paid online, thus avoiding penalties.

Tommg, your post got me to thinking. Maybe some experts can further elaborate on this:
I’ve always just used LightRoom to export my post processed raw files to jpg files and using those jpg files for printing at Costco and other local printers. What features might I be missing by not using the print module?

Just for fun, I am attaching some photos taken with different "normal" rangefinder lenses of the era mounted on a Sony digital camera, all at their maximum aperture. There are lenses from Leica, Leotax, Kodak, Voigtlaender, Canon, Canter, Highkor, and Ares. Can anyone tell which is the Leica lens?

All beautiful images, kymarto 👍🏽
I’ll take a guess at which is the Leica, actually I’ll take two guesses #1 or #9.
I’ll be watching to see how wrong I was 😉

I know the effects can be obtained with post processing but am curious about diffusion filters. Have any of you used these for portraits or other things like landscapes? And, if so, what are your thoughts?

I think you did a good job on the lighting. As far as the extra vertical space, my first thought, whether instinct, natural reaction, or “training”, was in line with other comments that it was excessive and needed a tighter crop. However, the extra vertical space in the last image is growing on me. I now think that unusual crop works well on this particular image, especially with your lighting of the background.

I’m losing my internal battle to refrain from responding to this post. If your “friend” really asked “Why did you take this photo?” or something to that effect, it says a lot about him, and not in a good way!!!

He should go in and give the subjects hands-on posing instructions so he can take a “professional” image! There, I’ve vented. 😉
