I'll be interested in the responses as I'm debating whether my next camera will be FF or crop sensor.

Used to have a squadron of those at Myrtle Beach AF Base. They would come over our house out in the country at almost treetop levels during training exercises with those engines screaming. Glad the AF didn't abandon the Warthog.

Pay me now or pay me later.

All other things being controlled, the sharpness of one's images is directly proportional to the sturdiness (is that a word?) of the tripod.

I agree with TriX. Try Recuva. I think it's free from www.recuva.com. I recovered an entire card full of images once with it that I had deleted via a mistaken re-formatting. Kinda like a situation I encountered in 1972 during a massive, freak snowstorm in central South Carolina. 18" of snow fell in 12 hours. Shutdown that part of the state for days. I had a Pentax Spotmatic (still have it) and "took" a roll of 36 images of this historic event only to learn that the end of the film had come detached from the take-up reel. Therefore, I had not gotten a single shot! I learned to be sure the film was tight on the reel before closing the back and to watch the rewind advance when advancing the film after each shot. We all have our moments we'll never forget but learn from in the process. :-( :-) Good luck.

My trip was on a Hurtigrutin. Think name of ship was Richard With. Didn’t see the Eagle. I also shot with D300.

Cade’s Cove for sure but get there EARLY, well before the gate is opened. Lots of photo opportunities, especially morning mist / fog. If you’re a somewhat serious photographer, take your tripod and normal compliment of filters - certainly polarizer and GNDs. If you get frustrated with crowds and deplore waiting on traffic to move, don’t go. Oh, be sure to take that necessary pit stop before you go thru the entrance gate.

I'll be going along the Norwegian coast above the Arctic Circle this summer. I'll have Canon DII, with 10-40mm, 75-105mm, and 100-400mm lenses.

I'm anticipating low-sun situations, of course. But have any hoggers been there and found other things to look for -- or watch out for?

Thanks in advance.

We were there last year in June. Shoot with a Nikon and carried only one lens, an 18-200mm with polarizer and graduated neutral density filters. I didn’t carry a tripod and didn’t miss it. Had a monopod which helped in the midnight sun low light situations but didn’t use it much otherwise. If you’re on a cruise or formal tour shore excursion there’s not much time to set up and take a number of trial shots as is the case with most tours. If you’re traveling alone at your own pace, take the tripod and take your time composing. We made it all the way to Nordcap and got some decent cliff shots. Don’t miss the colorful fishing villages and fiords. Study up and have fun!

Dennis, what have you found to be the best set-up settings? Also, have you set up any custom menus?
