Yes I did some research and Rome alone is my great concern. I guess I should have written a more focused question. And this is not a photography trip either.
Thanks for response.

I surely will check out Pacsafe bags, thanks for the tip.
Since we only have a day in Rome, I will just take camera with the 16mm, pocket extra batteries so both hands are free. I’m definitely buying the strap though, I like it.

Yeah, Rome is my main concern with theft. I’ve never been there but have travelled other places in Europe, most are safe except Paris.

Traveling with the Fuji kit is so much easier. And you won’t be disappointed with the results. Enjoy your trip,

You’re absolutely right, so I’m going to take my Fuji gear. I’m happy with results I get for the past 3 years using it.
Btw, is there a big improvement with the XT-2 besides the 24m resolution ? It’s still on sale and I might just get it before the trip but with all the talk about XT-3 makes me think it may not make good sense.

I’m adding 2 of the 3 places you mentioned, Rothenberg already on my list.
Thank you.
My biggest concern with focus speed is when going thru the Vatican and the group is moving fast, I’d like to just snap away and look and choose keepers later.

DSLRs have faster focusing but not mirrorless more so with older X-T1.

I would bring the Fuji and your 3 lenses. In Rome, I enjoyed Street Photography of people and flower boxes on buildings. Yes, the tourist places also.

I'm leaning more into the Fuji 'coz of the weight. Thanks.

Flew many times on those when I was in Iran early '70s. Flying between Vahdati and Tehran but sometimes takes as much as 20 hours 'coz they would fly into other airbases. I guess they don't have firm routes to fly to, LOL.

Greetings,

I'm looking for suggestions on which photographic gear to bring with me on our Europe trip next month. We have a 5 day "Trips for Troops" bus trip to Italy from Stuttgart and 3 more weeks to bum around Germany and Austria.

I'm debating whether to bring a Fuji X-T1 with 18-55 zoom, 35 f1.4 and 16 f1.4 or Nikon d810 with 24-70 f2.8 and 50 f1.8.

My concern with the Fuji is focus slowness, and everyone knows how heavy the Nikon gear is. What do you guys suggest especially this who've been to Rome ?

Be glad to hear from all.

You still have some good memories of those times though, not as bad as when your possession are taken from you. My camera and photos, including negatives and few other worldly things to me were all taken as we tried to leave Tehran in early '80s.

Would be nice to have photos to look at and reminisce.

My ride to Tehran from Vahdati AFB Iran at least once a month back in 1975- 77.
Overnight train is a bit expensive and this is free. Noisy ride though.

Has anyone here ever been in 42nd st photo?

I have, back in 1984 (former Yorker). I would NOT buy anything from them.
There's more refutable vendors out there but not 42nd St.

D810?

Yes, its a d810. Adorama=$1799 / Nikon store refurb=$2496
B&H have 5 of used ones, about a $100 more in same rating

Also, $31 for 2 year extended warranty on top of store 90 days

Thank you all for your responses.

I made my purchase today from Adorama, with the expeditious help by Larry Wiengarten. I gave him sku# of a couple that they have listed used and he came back with one with 1009 shutter count. Its got a used rating of E+ so hopefully its in near mint condition with 90 day warranty.

Nikon store refurb cost more ($2499) so this is a better deal.

KEH sells quality gear. I have 10,000 photos in LR and have probably deleted at least that many , If your buying used in excellent plus condition don't worry about the shutter count you will upgrade to another camera before the count is an issue.

I'm actually concerned with the count 'coz its going to take a beating from heavy usage. Camera will be a gift to my brother in Doha, Qatar, he has joined partnership (https://www.storyteller.house) with 2 other photographers after leaving magazine firm.

Possibly, I may sell the camera separately, so then I'll list the lenses.

If you want to buy a Nikon Why wouldn't you have faith in buying something from a Nikon store?? In what way do you feel Nikon is going to "scam" you??

When I mentioned "scam", I meant other vendors aside from Nikon itself, B&H, Adorama, KEH. I've purchased from them directly but not to Craigslist or eBay and those are the ones primarily I'm concerned about.
