Pick 'em. As to the exposure difference, a 2/3 stop change if shooting raw just doesn't matter. I would err on the side of not overexposing, and hence choose the faster one.

Thanks. That's my inclination too WRT Baily's Beads (or maybe split the difference). But why such a slow shutter speed being suggested for the Diamond ring? That's what's really got me confused. Hoping someone with more experience than I, who has shot total eclipses before, explain that one to me. (I've only shot a total eclipse once - in 2017)

Conflicting / confusing exposure suggestions for Baily's beads. Also, confused about the Diamond Ring.

Two very prominent names in the solar eclipse photography world are Fred Espenak (Mr Eclipse) and Xavier Jubier (creator of solar eclipse timer software).

Fred has a suggested Eclipse settings chart where you pick your ISO and F-stop, then it suggests best shutter speed. Xavier has an online tool where you enter your ISO and f-stop and it suggests best shutter speeds.

For Baily's Beads, Fred's chart, at ISO 100 and f8, suggests a shutter speed of 1/4000th, but Xavier's tool suggests 2/3 stop faster at 1/6400 (note these speeds are with filter off).

For the Diamond ring, both the chart and the tool suggest the same: 1/125th

Discussion: What are your thoughts on the Baily's beads settings? would you shoot at 1/6400 (pretend you're using ISO 100 and f8) as Xavier's tool suggests, or would you slow the shutter speed to 1/4000 (which would move the exposure 2/3 to the right)? I'm conflicted. I will be shooting High Speed shutter and don't want to bracket because the R5 will only shoot the bracketed shots then stop unless you release the shutter and re-press it again, which I don't want to have to do.

Also: I'm a bit confused about what is called the "Diamond Ring" effect. Many resources seem to imply that the Diamond Ring is the bright bit just before Baily's beads, but then I've seen other resources that suggest that Baily's beads occurs just at the end of Baily's beads. In both Freds chart and Xavier's online tool, the recommended shutter speed is significantly slower than what they recommend for Baily's beads. This would suggest that they are referring to the latter definition of Diamond Ring" that would be at the end of the Beads and thus have less light. Otherwise, if the Diamond ring is what occurs before the Beads, why would you be shooting so much slower when there would be much more light? I'm confused. Thoughts?

That's odd. I originally got there from a Facebook link. I left the seminar for a while and tried to get back just now with this link (which was the link in the FB post) and now I get the same as you. Oh well. Sorry about that.

How do I navigate to links and resources?

Click the Home Button, then click the "All Sections" link, then scroll to the "Links and Resources and click that. Here's the seminar link (maybe now that there's been some discussion it won't get deleted):

Personally, while there is a lot of "free" stuff out there, call be old fashioned, but I don't mind paying a reasonable price for content like Kelby One provides considering the tremendous amount of time and effort (by a lot of people) that goes into it (I'm not an ultra-smart multi-year professional who already knows everything). If you're someone who doesn't know it all and who appreciates well thought-out and well organized content, with access to lots of professional advice, then in my opinion, K1 is worth it. If you are someone who knows everything and who doesn't like to pay for the efforts of others, then by all means - seek the alternative free stuff that's out there.

It is true that a lot of the general content on K1 can be found for free on YT but what sets K1 apart (in my opinion and which works for me) is how well the material is organized, the quality of the instructors, and the ability to ask specific question in the K1 community as it relates to specific courses. And the K1 community is a very well moderated forum that is populated by many experts in their fields so getting prompt, accurate answers to sometimes complex questions is the norm rather than the exception (at least that's been my experience).

I also greatly enjoy "The Grid" which are weekly online seminars/meetings, usually with guest speakers and on specific topics. They also have Community Live presentations each week on various topics. For example, a couple weeks ago Erik Kuna did a great Zoom meeting on photographing the upcoming eclipses which I found extremely helpful.

Been a K1 member for a few years. Yes, for me it’s been worth it. Others’ mileage may vary. Tons of well-organised courses laid out in “tracks”. Just about any photography topic you can imagine….first rate professional instruction.

The online community is full of experts and is well moderated without the nonsense that goes on in non-moderated forums.

They also have lots of live interactive classes and group discussions.

Well, thanks, but after several tries, I managed to get the camera tethered with a USB cable, but then the Eclipse Maestro program told me that my Canon R5 camera is not supported. Argggg!

I am trying to figure out how to tether my Canon R5 to my MacBook Pro. I am hoping to use the Eclipse Maestro program developed by Xavier Jubier to drive my camera during the April eclipse.

I have a USC-C cable (male USC-C) on both ends but my 2015 Laptop has a USB-3 connection. I have a USB-C-to-USB-A (or maybe its USB-C to USB-3) anyway, I can plug the cable into my R5 and the other end (with adapter) into my Laptop but the camera isn't being seen. Even when I open EOS Utility 3, that program doesn't see that I have my R5 connected.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Does tethering require a special cable? Maybe my Adaptor I;m using is USB-A but needs to be USB-3 (they look the same).

Thanks in advance
