Mr. Burkholder brings up several interesting arguments in his first post above. I have not considered them before and will certainly have to investigate them further.
One thing that I know from experience is that Nikon makes only a small handful of premium, professional grade lenses specifically for their DX cameras. I have owned a 17-55mm f2.8 DX zoom for probably 12 years. It is an outstanding lens and still delivers the highest level of performance when used on my D500. I also have occasionally used it to shoot square format on my D810 and D850, where it yields results fully comparable to the 24-70mm f2.8, except for image size. I have also looked at the Gold Ring 16-80mm f2.8-f4 DX zoom, but found it pretty disappointing. It turns out to be f4 over almost all of its range, and its construction really does not impress me.
On the other hand, I extensively use an FX Gold Ring 24-120mm f4 zoom on my second D500. That lens needs a little boost on saturation, contrast, and sharpness, but otherwise delivers consistently excellent results on the DX body.
My biggest concern with using an FX lens on a DX body is really around what might happen with stray rays of light from the larger image. In teality, I've never found this to be a problem in the 12 years that I've been using DX lenses. It could become a problem if the flat black paint started flaking off of the structures inside the mirror box.
To summarize, I have experienced zero downside from using full frame lenses on DX cameras, going all the way back to my D200. I have paid a small weight penalty, but it was nothing insurmountable. And when I did expand to full frame, I was ready to go except for a better wide angle and eventually a longer telephoto.

I own the D500, D610, D750 & D810. I recently bought the 17-55mm f2.8 DX, to be used exclusively on the D500. It's not cheap & pretty heavy but I love this D500 & 17-55mm combo.
