Could your focal length be changing as you’re focusing? That could cause the aperture to change which would affect the photo. That lens is known for having lens creep, so it could be happening unbeknownst to you.

When I got my first DSLR, I watched a lot of free videos at https://www.PhotographyCourses.Biz which were extremely easy to understand. They have videos geared to beginners, intermediate or advanced. Just start with the beginners videos. It helped me understand the concepts involved. In the header banner, just choose the free videos. Good luck.

There is a wonderful boardwalk over the marsh on South Padre Island, just across the bridge from Brownsville. It will put you eye to eye with all manner of birds. Herons, egrets, spoonbills, whistling ducks, stilts, ibis, kingfishers, songbirds, you name it.

Yes, the boardwalk is accessable behind the convention center.

When in Brownsville, head to South Padre Island to the birding center. In Harlingen, about 40 miles north of Brownsville, the Hugh Ramsey nature center. Also Santa Ana state park or Laguna Atascosa.

Edit: At Hugh Ramsey, I’ve seen Green Jays, hummingbirds, chachalacas, purple martins, orioles, kiskadees, and there is also a group of javalinas roaming through.

I started with a T3i and went to the 80D. I love the camera and have nothing but good things to say about it except for low light situations which it doesn’t perform well in.

For some reason that I still haven’t figured out, presidential candidates love coming to Iowa. In the year or so prior to an election you can’t throw a rock without hitting one, so I’ve seen several before they were elected, going back to Reagan. A couple of them have actually made a stop in our little town after being elected.

It's a big leap from 6.14 to CC 2021 . Many many small changes & improvements have been made since 2017.

The little ones weren’t enough to incentivize me to go to a subscription though.

I’ve been using Lr 6.14 and never had a reason to upgrade to the subscription, but after viewing this video, I may have to rethink. It looks like this newest version might just be a game changer.

It certainly seems reasonable that the Stone’s slogan was taken from the song, vs. the song coming from the restaurant slogan. "over" the viaduct does seem like an odd phrase; not sure anywhere someone would live over a viaduct, but perhaps artistic license as you mention.

I did find this post, which referred to Mashalltownmainstreet as a source, but have not been able to find/access the link - perhaps a members only page? But if this is correct, depending how soon the 3rd ave viaduct was built after 1916, the slogan might have still have been coined by the Stone’s before the song that was published in 1925 as this post says. Might someone know when the viaduct was constructed – I have not been able to find any detail on it? I might try emialing marshaltownmainstreet to see if they know the source of this.

I found some references to the original 3rd ave. viaduct having been built in 1913-14. I will ask in the Marshalltown history group for clarification.

Interesting the rememberance of the Stone family decendent. I also found from a you-tube version of the song bybanjojudie (Judy Muldawer ). She helpfully had posted the original sheet music and these additional lyrices (undated), attached.

My interest is as a magic lantern collector (magiclanternsociety.org), I obtained two slides of the song, just one verse and the chorus, part of a larger set to be sure.

I started researching the song due to the unusual lyrics and have embarqued down a long parth of research regarding the song, composers, 78 rpm recordings, and Marshalltown history looking at the Times-Republican stories regarding the restaruant, the Marshal Vinegar works, and 1921 Sanborn maps to locate the restaruant, viaduct, Union Station, and the vinegar works. I hope to make a presentation/show out of this (as an amature/volenteer). Also reseaching some of the lyrics such as the reference to "Shiek" which apparently was slang in the 1920's refering to 1921 movie The Sheik starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayresas as "A romantic lover or a young man on the prowl"

Any other info or tidbits appriciated. Best -

The more I read the lyrics and read some of the comments in the Marshalltown history group, the more I’m convinced that the Stone family had borrowed and paraphrased the song lyrics in order to help guide travelers to the restaurant. The most telling thing for me is the reference in the lyrics to living “over the wiaduct”. There was never any building in town that would have been over the viaduct. However, the writer may possibly have used poetic license in that portion. I do find it to be ironic though that Stone’s was directly below the viaduct and across from the vinegar works and that they used the lyrics to the song. Thank you for asking about it. Stone’s was a fixture in town for more than 100 years, only closing a few years ago when the descendants couldn’t aford the upkeep on the old building. They were known for their sky high lemon chiffon pie.

I am reaseaching this song Down by the Winger Woiks and am wondering if there is any other information that documents the Stone's slogan as inspiration for the song, or any information regarding the poem that is mentioned?

Thanks -

One of the respondents to my request provided a link to a discussion which contains additional lyrics : Here's a link to the lyrics and some discussion............https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=62736

There is ongoing discussion in my Marshalltown history group and I’ve heard from a descendant of the Stone family who tells me that she has the lyrics to the song printed on very old paper framed and currently hanging in her home. I’ll continue to monitor the site.

May I ask what your interest in the song is?

I have asked for more information from members of a facebook group “History of Marshalltown and surrounding areas”. I’m sure someone there can provide the kind of information you’re searching for.

Have you checked the lens thouroughly for some type of locking mechanism that needs to be changed to unlock the focus ring? That was my initial thought when reading your post. Hopefully that’s all it is.

Question - can anyone now join the Exploration of digital Artistry section now without having to be approved by an admin? When it was first started I asked to join and the snarky reply that I got from the person running it made me decide that I wanted no part of it.
