My question would be why did he have a mooring where the tide leaves him high and dry? Since the mooring ball can be seen to the right of the boat, this must have been intended to be a regular mooring, which brings me back to the question of "why so close to the rock"?[/quote]
First off: Thanks for taking time to consider the photo. Your thoughts are welcome.
I did meet the owner on his way to pump the water out of the boat. It did float when the tide returned. He did not tell me why the boat was moored in the area for several weeks prior to sinking. He probably did not even know about some of the rocks on the bottom. The bottom here is seldom seen. The greater mystery is why he again left the boat here to sink again. This time it appears to have found a hole. Only the top of the antenna is visible now - more of less as the tide changes but, never the boat.

I think it's a great shot. My thought, though, would be to crop the sky a bit more and just sub do the color a bit. BTW, I was at Yaquina Bay and Light House a couple of years ago. So picturesque.

Thanks for your comments. Come back again and photograph some more. I hope you got a couple of wall hangers or portfolio shots.

The simple truth is that some peopole have an inherent talent for noticing things, such as the boat in your picture... We seem to be having a 'golden moment' in photography, and our (my) lives are better for it. After all my writing, it all seems to boil down to intuition.

A very insightful, helpful post. It gives voice to some of my feelings. I have ambitions to develop "the eye" if its possible. To some degree I think it can be. My brother who was a high school art teacher was asked by the school board it art could really be taught. He prepared a demonstration - a demonstration of progress. Some students started the year demonstrating talents that other students came close to at the end of the year. The talented ones were producing some exceptional work at the end. My brother was satisfied, as were others, that progress was an achievement. It avoids absolutes in a very subjective area.

Great shot! I also like everyone's edited and cropped renditions too. I especially like Didereaux's B&W cropped version.

I liked his reasoning - fog means B&W. He has encouraged me to explore B W more.

You got in a great shot. Just fine as first shown, but as a base for manipulation and experimentation it is first rate. Each renditition has lots of character and appeal (IMHO). Definitely a wall worthy effort (esp the B&W)

I was astonished and honored that members would take time to show me how they thought the picture could be improved. I liked their versions very much. I am reminded how many different ways there are shoot a scene and then to render it. But then, that is why we are here I think.

My opinion would be to bring the boat in closer by taking out some of the foreground. Great picture.

I respect that observation very much. I was attempting to take the unusual opportunity given to make the bay bottom a key element. I completely understand a preference for making the boat more prominent. Some of the members here took time to make some very appealing versions.

Rolly, very nice, love the composition and all the colors. Thanks for sharing. Tejaswrangler :)

I lived in Houston prior to moving to Oregon and Green in Oregon is a dominant color and my wife and I sometime attempt to count the shades of green we see from a particular vantage point. Thank you very much for taking time to comment.

I have had such a positive experience that I will post in the future and I appreciate knowing how to make sure messages stay related. Thank you.

If I created this picture, it would be hanging on my living room wall.

Thank you for the terrific compliment and we do have it printed on metal. The picture was criticized by a reviewer on another forum. So, I thought I would see what the Hogs thought.
I failed at universal approval - I had hoped for immortality as the first human who won universal acceptance.

The boat is now sunk in a deep hole with only the antenna visible even at low tide. The location is about 4 miles east of Newport on the Yaquina Bay road. If you are in the area I think you might enjoy the drive between Newport and Toledo, OR via the Yaquina Bay road.

Thanks for the education. I am afraid that I might have not responded to the kindness shown properly.

Thank you. I also like this version. It makes the picture more about the boat and less about the bay. I intended that the picture be more about the bay. But, feedback suggests that the extensive foreground is a problem for some.
Your work is certainly appreciated.

New to this and I want to make sure the reply is attached to the B&W version. I am most grateful for your input.
I like the moodiness of this version as well. Thank you very much.
