I was planning to upgrade from a Nikon D7100 to a D500. When I shoot I shoot in a simultaneous mode of jpg & RAW. I also use photoshop elements to process photos. I recently read the D500 RAW shots are not capable of being processed in photoshop. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

I have the D500 and Photoshop and I have no problems processing my photos from my D500.

A question from a friend who is going to spend big bucks on a Ballhead. No, don't offer alternatives as it is useless. Question is for actual users of RRS ballheads; what are the pros and cons of a lever clamp as opposed to a knurled knob. Does the extended lever get in the way? Any chance of accidentally opening. There will be no quick change of camera bodies. Meanwhile I as a mere mortal use my pistol grip. Thanks for any advice.

I have had a RRS ballhead for two years now. Love it. Very solid and easy to use with the clamp. And it would be pretty difficult to accidently release it as it fits nice and tight.

Anyone shoot only RAW? I find as I shoot more and then go to edit and create catalog or a book of travel or events, I use Mac Photo and after importing and saving on my iMac I have to spend time pulling the RAW from the jpeg/RAW slot.
Any disadvantage to shooting only RAW besides the size of the file?

Have shot only RAW for several years. I like total control over my results, I make all the decisions.

Looking at purchasing a Nikon Z7 with Nikon F4 24-70 lens. Have quote from Abe's of Maine, seems to have best price. As part of the purchase they offer a number of add-on warranty options for 3-5 years, starting at $299 for 3 year extended warranty, up to 5 year "DOP Accidental Damage Warranty" for $699. I'm pretty careful with my camera gear, have never sent something back for repair. Still using my NikonD7000, time to upgrade. Is this something you would recommend? Thoughts on the value of these warranties? Experience with Abe's of Maine?
Thanks,
Wayne

Stay away from Abe's of Maine. Nothing but trouble and waste of time and money, Buy from someone you can trust like B&H.

Has anyone tried the latest Z7 firmware update to see if the autofocus is really faster and it works better in low light conditions?

I updated my Z7 firmware and it does seem like it does focus faster.

About an hour ago, I was taking my D500 with the 18-105 lens off my tripod and it slipped out of my grip. It fell on carpet. The lens came of and is trashed. I put my only other lens, a Nikon 50mm f/ 1.8 on the body. Thank God, the body is fine. Now I get to save for the Nikon 18-140 zoom.

And this is why I have insurance on all my camera gear. it cost $1.00 per thousand and pays 100% replacement. I have this through State Farm. A couple of years ago, while in some rough terrain, my tripod fell over and my 14 - 24 F2.8 lens jammed the lens. It cost $362.00 to repair and State Farm picked up the entire amount.

I use a Nest carbon fiber gimbal from camera cottage. The owner, Mt shooter is a regular on this site. I use it with a Nikon d850 and 200 - 500 Nikkor lens.i mainly use it for kite/windsurfers. It is very well made and easily accommodates this combination. I consider the price to be very reasonable for the superior quality and service provided.

Keep your camera on Auto-Everything as its standard stand-by configuration so you can get the grab shot.

Leave it that way, unless you have a good reason to change something.

I have a Z6 and a D850. The Z6 is nice and light with the 14-30 and 24-70 F/4.0. The D850 is head and shoulders above the Z6 in speed and ease of use. As mentioned above the Z6 takes a long time to wake up. And low light focusing is slow.

The Z6 is fun to play with and gives excellent results under the right conditions. It might even be considered fast handling if moving up from a view camera. I would not choose it over a dslr as a primary camera.

I have the Z7. It works great even in low light. Never goes to sleep either.

Nikon has a Trade Up to Z promotion that is tempting me to trade in my D810. It seems that some initial AF concerns with the Z7 were resolved with a firmware update. Wasn’t sure if anyone has experience to share after switching from a D800, 810, or 850 to a Z6 or Z7. Thanks.

Traded in my D5 for a Z7. It was a good decision. Love the Z7.

I've decided to sell all my Nikon to KEH except for my D850 and 5 prime lenses. And will get the Sony A7iii and a couple of primes. I'm thinking of trying the system for a few months and then just sell off the rest of my Nikons and spend that on more glass. At 72 I just feel this is the way to go. And I believe that mirrorless is the foreseeable future. Plus my Granddaughter is using mirrorless and she wants nothing to do with DSLRs. I'm sure I will be taking a loss as opposed to selling private but I've got 30 something items and I just don't look forward to selling private from past experience. Does anyone have experience dealing with KEH? They seem like a good company to deal with

I also made this move a few months ago. I sold my D5 and a few lenses and bought the Z7. It came with a free adapter so I can use my lenses. The Z7 is an amazing camera. The only thing I do not like is that you cannot lock the focus point. I use BBF and often my hand moves the focus point, but I am getting better at it.

I believe it is weather resistant, not weather proof.

My D500 and D5 and Z7 are all Weather Resistant, according to Nikon.

Lately, I've been formatting my SD cards through the Menu of my D750. It seems faster, and it's easier to read. With the red buttons, it seems iffy, and selecting card 1 or card 2 makes me read tiny letters. Do any of you use the Menu system to format. Aside from Nikon, I don't know of other cameras that have buttons to format cards.

I have always used the menu system. It is usually the last thing I did with the menu, so as soon as I hit the menu button, it says, Format Card. Quick and easy.
