The real trick to photographing dragon flys is to approach them head on. The have several Sensors on their heads and can detect movement and light change. When approached from the sides they will often fly away as you have cast a shadow or they have sensed movement. If you approach them from the front, they can see you, how far away you are and normally will let you get very close. Not all the time, but it gets much easier after the first one. In macro I have had the lens up to 1 1/2 inch away from these guys. Not all the time, but enough to the point they are no longer a challenge. Try getting down on their level and approach from the front next time you see one, believe me it gets easier and easier with practice.

Thanks for the tip to approach from the front. These are all stunning.

Don't worry...they growl but rarely bite.... :D

I really do not like to be growled at when I am trying to find out information and most of all, even if rarely, have them bite.

Welcome to the forum! There is so much to see and learn here, it would take several lifetimes to absorb it all. Focus on areas that interest you, and work on them one at a time. Won't seem quite so overwhelming that way.

Don't be shy about posting, either. Everyone here is still learning. And only two of our members actually bite, lol. The rest of us might make growly noises, but we're pretty harmless.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the nice welcome. I appreciate all those who give help and I must admit that some of the growly noises I have heard here have made me cautious of joining and then the thought of posting and being growled at is scary. I will continue to learn by others posting.
