I'm retired USN also. I've had my D7100 for almost a year and love it but I agree you couldn't go wrong with either camera. Find a good camera store and see how they feel in your hand. If you have friends who have either DSLR it's great to share info, experiences and (maybe) lenses.

Shooting in both JPG and RAW is useful when traveling. I save pictures in both in my D7100 and frequently transfer specific JPGs to my iPad and email to friends and family while I'm on the go. When I get home I transfer the Raw file to the Mac for PP.

I have used Carbonite on my past two Macs and I continue to use it now. It works just fine.

It's like the saying "Real men don't eat quiche." Real men (and women) eat whatever they want, or in this case, wear whatever they want, need, or works. Cool ain't cool if your camera is in pieces on the ground.

Welcome Mike. I live a few miles south of you in Winneconne. I'm currently 1 week into rotator cuff repair therapy and am going through withdrawal from not being able to get out and shoot as we transition from summer to fall.looking forward to seeing some of your work posted here!

I have a D7100 and the only focus issues have been operator (me) generated. Having two 32 gig cards lets me shoot in both RAW and jpg Fine. Saving the image in both gives me the best of both wolds and RAW has let me salvage what would have been a sub-par file in jpg.

I got the 18-105 as a kit lens with my D7100. I have other lenses but like RetiredPhotog this is still my everyday lens and is mounted 70+% of the time. From flower close-ups to distance landscapes it's worked well.

I Like color too. The B&W looks like an attempt at artsy but the color shows reality and imagination.

My daughter gave me Lightroom 5 for my birthday so I'm "forced" into learning PP. I didn't do much to these - mostly exposure adjustments. I shot in RAW but I still don't understand much about the increased editing options available in RAW over jpg. Anyway, discussion and critique is encouraged.

I like the deeper blue and the bridge traffic from the longer exposure of the DSLR. The P&S was at 6.6mm, ISO 800, 1/3 sec. and f/3.5. I didn't have a tripod and didn't want to try for much longer.
