Thanks for the advice, the back drop was the Boston skyline. If only I had focused better! I appreciate the feedback!

Yes forget about fast shutter as some have said it's easer than it looks set camera to bulb . Pre focus the area in daylight . Or anything in the that you can use smaller fstop . When something is going hit shutter and count of seconds one thousand one , one thousand two etc . Leave shutter open tell you think you have some good ones .some times I take a three second or more shot throw a hat over the len's move the camera where you think you
Have a blank spot , take the hat away if you see one in that spot count a few sec then close shutter . And they look better if your a fair way back don't zoom in on them unless you want to cover one ot two booms in the whole frame . And if there is tall buildings in the back ground with lights so much the better .
Yes forget about fast shutter as some have said it... (show quote)

Thanks, I will keep trying!

I have shot fireworks and the first time was a disaster. What worked for me was taking off the auto focus and manually focusing on the first few fireworks. I left my camera on bulb and just used a cable release and held it open as long as I wanted too. I used a wide open aperture since depth of field should not be a problem. I used ISO 100 to reduce noise and found the first few over exposed. I just moved an f stop or two and it worked. You did some good advice here, keep trying, it's fun.

Nice shot, thanks for the tips!

You're on your way but I'd recommend a couple things. Tripod of course. Turn off any image stabilizers. Set to f8, ISO 100. Shoot somewhat wide if you're using a zoom; if not, use your shortest lens. Turn off AutoFocus and focus manually to infinity and back off a smidge.
Use a remote trigger or cable release and shoot on bulb. When you hear the pop of the rocket being fired open the shutter and hold it open until the fireworks are over. (Try not to shoot through a window to avoid reflections.) Its also a good idea to cover your eyepiece to avoid any possible light pollution.
Don't let anyone kid you, you have to shoot "tons" of shots to get a few good ones. But who cares, nobody knows how many you took and your shots will be so much better than the cell phone shots your friends took they'll think you're a pro.
Attached is a shot from last July 4th using the above formula. (Please note, this is a single exposure not a composite).
Almost forgot; this was shot in RAW and processed in Lightroom.
You're on your way but I'd recommend a couple thin... (show quote)

Happy New Year!

In the meantime, if this is all that you have, a bit of cropping and boosting might just save them from the recycle bin. Till next year anyhow....

I wish I let the camera autofocus! Nice shot

The last time I shot fireworks I used manual shutter at
5-seconds, ISO 100 and let the camera decide the rest. I don't have a remote so I used my 10-second in camera delay because the display was quite long. Here's one photo I got... this with a
Fuji point and shoot.

Did you manually set up the focus? If you did, did you just set it beyond infinity? That might be the problem. You need to make sure you are seeing the cleanest focus possible. Infinity has a pretty big area around it. My lenses focus best at infinity just about mid point of the infinity symbol.

If the camera is trying to focus, it is not catching it at the sharpest point.

OH...You are so right! that is exactly what I did! thanks so much!

We booked that hotel months in advance so I could get some good shots....haha maybe next year!
