A couple of years back I bought a set of Vanguard Alta Pro legs... without a head, as
I had a generic pistol grip head. The legs were plenty to safely
hold my D700 and lenses. Same goes for the generic head, but
the margin of support ability of that generic head was not as good as the legs; hence
my interest in the for sale forum... and a week or so ago,
noticed a very nice Alta Pro pistol grip ball head for sale
for $85us... ($117aud)... a bargain for my favourite type of head,
but postage down to Australia would have taken the gloss off that deal.

So I surfed the Australian for sale sites and found an Alta Pro head with
legs... exactly the same as the legs I already had (the very versatile and
sturdy Alta Pro 263AT)... for... $84aud... that's $60us for the head, legs
and two double locking QR plates delivered...
Australia Post being Australia Post, means thrown over your
front fence, but hey, it was packed well and unscathed.

It needed a couple of Allen bolts tightened and a squirt of Inox... now the
unit's 100% ... that sells new on the net down here for $295...

I purchased a Vanguard tripod several years ago. I’ve been pleased with it but for one minor problem with the quick release plate button. Pressing it in sometimes took some fiddling around. I finally got tired of having to do that so I contacted Vanguard. They advised me to return the ball head to them, which I did. Within 2 weeks they I received a replacement at no charge even though I was well outside the warranty period. I’m posting this in praise of the manner in which they took care of the problem. When in need of a tripod I would certainly recommend Vanguard.
