It has become a habit for me to edit my RAW data with proprietary software, I use Nikon View NX2 for my NEF data and Olympus Workspace for my ORF data. The reason why I have been doing this is because when I print my files I am assured my colors will be reproduced faithfully.
This is most important for accurate reproduction of skin colors in portraits.

I completely agree with you. Nobody knows their RAW file cocktail better than the individual manufacturers. I have tried several different RAW editors but skin colors for example on Nikon Capture NX-i are much more faithfully reproduced.

Most of my shooting is in the range of 17-75mm. I very seldom change lenses and have never needed sensor cleaning. I shoot a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 constant aperture on my D3400 and shoot with the Tamron 17-50 constant aperture f2.8 on my D90. The IQ on both lenses is excellent and both are great in low light. If I really need to go longer I pull out the 70-300. Very seldom used however.

I couldn't agree more!

I do have one of those collapsible Nikon 18-55 VR II which is noticeably less sharp than the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or any of my primes. It's been sitting somewhere in a dark corner for quite some time now collecting dust.

Another one of my favorites is the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro which is very sharp and has beautiful BOKEH. I use it for macro and portrait shots together with the very good Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8.

If I want to travel small and light I just use a 35mm f/1.8 on my D3300.

Most people forget that in the film days many cameras only came with one prime lens somewhere around 50mm and everyone came home with great pictures.

There is absolutely no need to cover every mm focal range from 10 to 400mm unless you are a professional and/or plan a very specific type of photoshoot.

I went a completely different route. My walkaround lens is a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and I also have a Nikon 55-300mm tele zoom which I almost never use. The picture quality of the Tamron is almost as good as a prime lens and the f/2.8 max aperture is great for low light shots. The 24mp of these cameras is usually enough for a decent crop and you still wind up with great shots unless you are planning to print very large. A large zoom range or a telezoom is therefore not really all that important. Many times I just have the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens on my camera and I always come back with great shots. My suggestion would be to get a very good short midrange zoom (like the 17-50) and then add more specialized lenses (like a macro or portrait lens in the 60-100mm range for example) when the need arises.

Yes, how long will it be before DSLR Cameras become extinct. They say Sales are falling for Nikon & Canon, How long before only Mirrorless Camera will be the only choice in town. If we need repairs done, where will we go,...Japan? Thailand? Indonesia? We might as well move on to the new Technology, but how long will that last?
Well I am not sure what the Shutter Count is on my Nikon D3300, but I hope it is low.😳🙄🤔😣

If you know what you are doing with your D3300 you don't have to buy into the hype. Besides my D7200 I have a D3300 as well and at this point I consider it a throwaway. It goes everywhere with me and get's used a lot. When it croaks I'll just buy another used or refurbished one for less than 300 bucks. With my style of shooting I don't think my pictures would get any better with a mirrorless camera. I leave those to the fanboys and measurebators.

So annoying when my phone has more memory than I do

I totally agree!

Each generation of smartphones reminds me more and more of my ex-wife. The one I just bought turned out to be very needy. It's constantly bitching about something and pointing things out I haven't done yet but it absolutely wants me to do.

At least with my Nikon I am still the boss and I can tell it what I want to do.

I have had several copies of the older 18-55 mm VR version and also the newer AF-S collapsible VRII. None of these lenses are that great optically have a pretty cheesy built quality and a plastic mount that often breaks at the most inopportune moment.

As a walkaround lens I now use a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 which I am very happy with. Picture quality is pretty much on par with my 35mm AF-S DX and 50 mm AF-S prime lenses.

I am using Yongnuo RF605 triggers. They can be configured to act as a wireless transmitter or receiver and can be fired in seperate groups if you have multiple flash setups. They can also be configured to work as a wireless shutter remote control. They have a small LCD panel which makes configuration very easy. They also integrate with other Yongnuo (602/603) triggers and the YN-560 flash system.

You are trying to compare apples to oranges!

The Tamron 90 mm macro is a special purpose lens well suited to macro and portrait photography.

The 18-400 is a generic all purpose jack of all trades master of none lens and as previously mentioned a design that comes with a lot of compromises. I personally think it is of counter intuitive to mount a lens like this on an interchangeable lens camera. If you consider a lens like this you would be better off just to buy one of those super zoom cameras and be done with it.

When I was a kid I wanted one of those really bad. My dad thought it was crap and bought me a used rangefinder with real dials instead. Now I am so glad he did!

Great subject and expression- nice concept. Problem is the lightg is relatively flat for a profile. If you can re-shoot that with a simple main light at about 135 degrees to the camer/subject axis and leave a bit more space in front of the subject, you are gonna have a masterful image! The image will take on dimension and POP!

So...I am at work at home, my studio is being painted and a few repairs are beig done in the office. All I have here to show you is my daughter's wedding portrait which is hanging over my desk. I took a quick shot of it with my cell phone camer- just to give you an idea.

Stick with your low key dark background. All you need is one light and a reflector. If you keep the camera in profile position but observe the subject full face and adjust the lighting for a Rembrandt or loop lighting, your profile lighting will be right on. Feather so that some light strikes the reflector and you will have a good fill source.

Thank you sir for taking the time to create your detailed response!

This is exactly the feedback I was looking for. I used a large octabox facing the subject about 5 feet away from about a 30 degree angle. The idea was to create soft light so it would be more flattering for a female but the I see the problem now with the shallow angle which made the lighting a bit too flat.

Your lighting setup looks very interesting and I will definitely try it next time I shoot a female portrait.

Thanks again!

I like the pose and feeling, but think a kicker light, or a reflector to give some definition to the black shirt will make it look a little less like a dismembered arm attacking her head. I'm not saying it to be mean, it's just there's no connection.

I do like that you didn't show the back of her hand, and it shows that you put thought into the pose itself.

It's funny you mentioned this! I did have a kicker light behind her and it formed a thin outline. I didn't like the looks of it and then edited it out to simplify the picture and make it more clean.

I use a little program called XnView. It is a free download.

What I like about it is that you can downsize (and upsize!) jpegs either by entering a new width and height, by percentage or by selecting from a list of different screen sizes (1024x768 for example). There are about 10 resampling options to optimize the conversion. It will also allow you to batch-convert multiple pictures.

This is a shot a took a few months ago of my sister-in-law Sarah. She wanted something a little bit different from the regular headshots and so we came up with this pose.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments!

Actually the circle in the eyes was created with a ring flash mounted on the camera and was done as an effect and on purpose.

I agree the picture is somewhat flat because the ring light was wrapped around the lens and firing straight at the subject. I do normally use my key light on a 45 degree and slightly downward angle but I wanted to try something different.

Sorry could not get picture to load. I will try again later!

Ok, this time the picture finally loaded!

The picture was meant as an introduction of myself into this group. I have been a member for a while but have never posted anything before.

Comments and critiques are appreciated!

Thanks,
Klaus
